"Not neutral, but truthful."
Ito lagi ang sinasabi ng prof namin sa media studies. Graduate ako ng AB Com. Field of study ko ang communication at journalism. Nagka-stint ako sa isang local newspaper for months before my current work. Journalism is never easy.
Tapos ngayon, araw-araw ko nalang nakikitang dinedegrade ng mga rabid supporters ng administrasyon ang media. Kesyo critical sa gobyerno, destabilizer na. Kailan ba hindi naging critical sa sinumang administrasyon ang media?
Nauunawaan ko ang iba na madaling maka-label sa media na biased (hindi "bias", noun 'yan). Hindi pa nila alam ang media literacy. Unang-una naming natutunan sa university 'yan. Andaming theories. Andaming models. Pinaka-highlight nito ang katotohanang ang media ang Fourth Estate.
Executive. Legislative. Judiciary. The Press.
May tagakilos. Tagagawa ng batas. Tagapagtaguyod ng batas. Tagabantay.
Media ang tagabantay. Fourth estate. Watchdogs. Ang primary purpose is to check and balance.
Anong iche-check and balance? Ang tatlo. Executive. Legislative. Judiciary. Kailangang checked and balanced. If you think the President is the ultimate decision-maker sa isang bansang democratic kagaya natin, you're missing a lot. There are the other two. Senate President at ang Chief Justice. One cannot touch the other. Hindi pwedeng manghimasok ang presidente sa senado at sa hudikatura. Vice versa.
This is where the press steps in. Malalaman ba natin ang bawat kilos ng gobyerno? Hindi. Ang mga programa? Ang mga sinusulong na batas? Ang tamang paggastos sa pondo ng bayan?
Saan natin nakikita 'yan? Media. The constitution even mandates every new law to be published in print before rolling it out to the public. Bakit? For us to be informed. That's a crucial word: informed.
Recently, nag-propose ako ng isang wild theory to my fellow journo friends. ONE DAY BLACKOUT.
Back in college, I personally argued with my prof nung sinabi niyang the only purpose of journalists is to disseminate information to the public. Napaka-restricting. Off-putting talaga para sa 'kin. Ongoing na debate sa lahat ng mga journalist ang objectivity. To remain truthful and neutral, unbiased, uncompromised.
Dun sumingit ang sinabi ng isa ko pang prof na "Not neutral but truthful". At itong ONE DAY BLACKOUT shit ko.
Basically, lahat ng media outlet sa bansa will agree to ditch their main social responsibility and suspend all operations for a day. No coverage of any kind. Kahit sa social media. May aksidente sa kanto? Pass. May patayan sa mall? Pass. Nag-break si (insert artista here)? Pass. No broadcasts. No radio programs. No newspapers. Not even social media posts.
TAPOS, wait here's the catch: WALANG KAHIT NA ANONG MENTION NG ANUMANG NANGYARI SA SUSUNOD NA ARAW. I mean, on the next day, resume coverage na BUT no news of the previous day should be published. LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED.
ONE DAY GONE IN THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY.
"Uy may barilan pala kahapon? Di ko alam."
"Wala palang pasok kahapon? Di ko alam. Pinauwi kami ng boss namin."
"Uy nagtaas pala presyo ng gas."
Ito kasi main argument ko sa prof ko. Hindi lang talaga disseminators of information ang media. They are the FRONTLINE RECORDERS OF HISTORY. Get rid of them for a day and you'll have one blank page in the country's history.
"Well, we will just prepare for that day para kami na magco-cover," sabi ng mga bloggers kamo?
No one will know when.
Except the media.
