{Mother's Day}

"!FELIZ DIA, MAMI!" I shouted, walking into her and Lin's room. She laughed, looking up at me.
"Gracias, amor." She smiled, tossing the blanket over. "Come sit next to me."
I sat on her left side, Lin in her right and Sebastian in her arms. Tobi was sitting at the foot of the bed, panting happily at us. We all smiled.
"I got you a present." I said, handing her the box that was in my hand. Vanessa's face lit up again, looking down at the card on top of it. I had written her a small letter.
"Mami." She read, "It's weird to think it hasn't even been a year since I met you, and that I haven't even been formally adopted yet, but that I'm calling you mami and I love you. It's been hard for me to let people into my heart because of the trauma from my past, but I've got you now and I remember what is like to have a mom for the first time ever. I love you so much. Happy Mother's Day."
On the side of the arm without the writing was a picture of us when we first got to know each other, both of us in pajamas drinking café con leche condensada. We both had leche mustaches.
Vanessa looked over at me tearfully, wrapping me in a hug as she stroked my hair.
"Mi hijita." She said, kissing the top of my head.
"For the record, the gift is from Sebastian and I, he was the one who picked it out. I wasn't sure which one to get you." I said, grinning at Sev. He laughed.
"Mama!" He shouted.
"Yeah, its mama's day!" Lin grinned, ruffling his hair.
Inside the box was a phone case that said "Don't make me use my lawyer voice" on the back, and a necklace I had bought with Gabe. He wrote a little note.
"Señora Vanessa, happy Mother's Day! Ce and I saw this necklace, and we thought of you. I helped buy it since you have been so kind to me since we met. Enjoy your day! Gabe."
"I love the case." She laughed, grabbing her phone to fit it on. "Lin, baby, this is so perfect."
"I agree. Now you don't even have to tell me." He said. We all laughed. Even Seb started to giggle.
"And the necklace is just perfect. Thank you so much, hija."
We sat in bed for a while longer, then we remembered the family was coming over for brunch.
"Give me a minute, I have some phone calls to make!" I shouted from my room.
"Hello, you've reached Gloria Garzon, leave your message at the tone!"
The line beeped.
"Hola, Señora Garzon." I said into my phone. "Happy Mother's Day. I just wanted to call and tell you happy day, and that I miss you. And Gabe misses you. I hope you get to talk to him today. Chao."
Next was my aunt, who I was still in contact with after the entire adoption fiasco.
"Hi, tia." I said into the receiver after the message. "Just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you and that I hope you have a great Mother's Day."
I hung up and walked into the kitchen, where the party had started. Music was playing, and everyone was dancing and setting the table and cooking. I grinned as Lin pulled me close into a samba.
I reminded myself that I need to go to church and to visit my parents at the memorial.
"You guys are so weird." I laughed as we all sat down, laughing about how I almost burned the kitchen down.
We ate happily, chatting about memories of our mothers, Vanessa grinning at me. She really was the best mother.
