Personality.
That's what you have to think of.
People are people and as humans, we are all different. Writing a male is the same as writing a female, and vice versa. All you're doing is thinking about how their personality is like. Not all females are the same and not all males are the same. Come on, you could think of Ed, Edd, and Eddy - each have their own style.
When you're thinking about personality, you're not thinking about their stereotypes or their gender roles. You're thinking of them, as a person, with a mind of their own.
Guys cry. Girls can be tough. Guys can and maybe like watching romance. Girls can and maybe like watching action films. Guys paint their kids fingernails for them and get their nails painted, too. Girls don't always like getting their nails done. Guys may talk about their feelings to their friends. Girls may not.
See, it all depends.
