There have been questions about having teen fiction set around a school.
It doesn't have to be focused around one. It's average to see a teen fiction novel set around school because that's where teens go to, but does it have to be always? No. You can do many other things when it comes to writing teen fictions.
You can have it set around summer. There's also during vacations like winter vacation, spring vacation, or even Thanksgiving vacation.
There's after high school - right after they graduate and figuring out if they should go to college or whatnot.
You can put them in school, but if you don't want to make it around the school, you can only put it in a few scenes such as saying your character is going to school or is in class, or eating lunch. But the rest of the story is elsewhere - after school, weekends, vacations...
You just have to think of ways how to create the story so you're not focusing on the parts that bring it down.
