This was the most nervous I had ever been. Sure, being on stage is pretty nerve racking. Trying not to mess up on solos are also pretty nerve racking. But when the doctor says your wife is four centimeters dialated, you pretty much think being on stage nervous is the least nervous you could ever be.

It was exactly five hours after we'd came to the hospital that we got the news she was in labor. The doctor said by the afternoon or evening, she'd be able to start pushing by the rate things were going. I was happy that my daughter was finally going to be here, but I was shit faced nervous.

"Brian, I'm having a contraction." Jackie said, taking a hold of the rail on the side of the bed. "Oh my God it hurts." I hurried to her side as she reached out for my hand in which I gave to her. I was ordered not to speak during a contraction because it would ruin her breathing concentration, so I stood quiet. "It hurts so bad." She cried.

With my free hand, I pushed some strands of hair away from her face. I wanted so badly to tell her the pain would go away, but I knew it wouldn't. By choice, she didn't want an epidural because she didn't want the baby to come out drugged. I, however, wanted her to get one now that I saw her suffer like that.

I turned to the monitor that began to print out a contraction graph. The lines were sharp, showing that she was having a strong contraction. A minute later, it started going down and her grip on my hand slowly relaxed.

"You good now, babe?" I asked once she took a full deep breath.

She nodded, "It hurts so bad." She said in a sore voice, whimpering. "I can't take the pain."

"We can always ask for the epi. I don't want to see you in pain." She shook her head, pouting. "Baby, I don't want to see you in so much pain. It's scaring me and it's gonna make me cry."

"I don't want the baby to be drugged up. You said before that-"

"That was when I read those stupid books. But it's for you. Not the baby. Do you want the epidural? I can ask the nurse to bring one." She nodded, giving me a small smile. "Alright, I'll be back."

"Brian." She called out as I stood up. I turned around, jerking my head. "I love you."

I smiled, "I love you too."

"Okay, go get my drugs." She ordered, trying to get comfortable in bed. I let out a laugh and left the room.

I rushed to the nurses' station and asked for an epidural. They said they had one person ahead of her and in thirty minutes they should be able to give it to her. Inside, I was jumping up and down, excited because she would finally get to enjoy her labor with out pain.

After informing Jackie, I told her I'd see who was outside in the waiting room and send them in while I went downstairs for a quick smoke. My nerves were going crazy and all I needed was a few drags so I could be the least bit relaxed.

I took a long drag of my cigarette with Matt by my side. He chose to come and keep me company while Suzy and McKenna were in the room with Jackie. I felt most comfortable that they were there. I wouldn't want anyone else but them to be taking care of her.

"You're almost gonna be a dad, dude." Matt said, eating some Cheetos soaked in lemon juice. He can thank Jackie for getting him into that.

I nodded, releasing the smoke, "I know. I'm nervous as fuck but my little buddy is helping me." I said, showing him the cig.

He laughed, "You do know once that baby is out, you have to stop smoking for good?"

"I know." I sulked, "It's bad for her even to smell the smoke on me. It's gonna be hard, but I know I can do it. Anything for my princess."
