“Bella Swan”
“Bella Swan” personalities are moreover the lack of personality. These are generally known to be used in characters like Bella Swan, “innocent/naïve” personas, maids/slaves/servants/vampire fucktoys (aka humans in love with a vampire), populars, abuse victims, and “I’m-just-your-average-on-good-terms-with-everyone” type characters. These characters are known for being another type of Mary-Sues, and have a tendency to blow readers minds away with their resemblance to bland cabbage soup. Horrendously hideously bland cabbage soup, that is.
Both personalities will amaze the audience with your lack of originality and make you seem like you have nada writing skills. They will also degrade your writing ability to that of a 1st grader.
Do everyone a favour, and make your character a mix between. The “A”-word and “Bella Swan” personalities are the ultimate extremes at each end of the personality scale, and each character should be a different ‘level of progression’ along this metaphoric ranking.
A great way of getting to know your character and remembering your characters is to plot down a character profile. This is a character profile I came up with and below it are some other writer’s responses. If you want, feel free to post your own character profile, and even if you don’t post one, at least fill one out. Ten chapters later, I can promise you that you will find this information very useful:
1. Character name. Yes, you have all seen the cringe-worthy instances where the writer forgets the main characters name
2. Character description (hair colour, age, height, eye colour, skin colour & any other relevant defining physical characteristics)
3. Describe their childhood
4. What are their flaws?
5. What are their greatest regrets?
6. What are their habits (good & bad)?
7. What are the significant events in their life? (past, present & future — this is where you need to know your plot)
8. Greatest ability?
9. To others, they are known as being...?
10. They spend most of their time worrying about...?
11. Describe their mother
12. Describe their father
13. Describe their (if any) siblings
14. Has your character ever hurt others (mentally &/or physically)
15. Best/closest friend/s
16. Lover/s & their history
17. Describe where they live
18. If they could change the past...
19. Describe their clothing style
20. Are they going to learn anything from their experiences?
21. Any other important details
