Kris introduced the mercenaries to the hashira, formed an alliance, and then they decided on putting up an electric fence around the town, and basically the aurora from Subnautica crash landed near the town, but far enough away from the town so it wasn't affected by the radiation from the aurora explosion.
So yeah, this is seriously descending into the apocalypse.
