"It's rude to ignore people."
I looked at him finally and straightened my back to appear more confident.
"Thanks but I had that handled." I said giving him the fake polite voice I'd given everyone else tonight.
"I'm sure your sassy attitude would have really shown him." He replied rolling his eyes.
"You know, I think I preferred it when you avoided me."
I turned away going for the table piled high with food but he followed me.
"You think I'm avoiding you? Don't flatter yourself."
I continued to ignore him as I plucked a square of cheese off a plate and popped it in my mouth.
"Then where have you been?" I asked chewing it slowly.
"I don't have to explain myself to you." He snapped crossing his arms.
He looked tired, exhausted actually.
"Okay." I said shrugging and plucking a cookie from a a tray and munching on it.
I could see him getting frustrated and I knew I should have felt bad that it gave me some joy but I didn't.
He took a small glass from the table and downed it, then picked up another.
"You know, if that kiss upset you that bad, you can just say so." I said raising my eyebrows at him innocently.
"I was just giving you a taste of your own medicine."
He choked a little on his drink.
"Is that what you think?" He snapped after he'd recovered. "You think that unpracticed, unmannered kiss could upset me?"
I felt my eyes widen. I stopped mid crunch on the cookie as my cheeks flushed in embarrassment.
"Unmannered?"
"Completely, it was like kissing a cave woman who's just learned to use her lips."
"Well I'm sorry I'm not more trained like the maids you sleep around with." I hissed.
"Apology accepted." He smirked.
I growled and threw the half eaten cookie at him. It bounced harmlessly off his chest leaving nothing but a few crumbs behind.
"Anna, Loki! I've been looking for you two! It's time for your dance." Frigga said her eyes going between her son and I.
She reached out and brushed the stray crumbs from his chest.
"Play nice you two." She said under her breath before she shoved him towards me.
My blood boiled and I stayed rooted to my spot, not wanting to be touched by Loki.
"It's only a few minutes of your time and it's expected that you two are on good terms..so!"
She grabbed my hand and placed it in Loki's.
I watched him tense but his fingers wrapped around my hand anyway.
"Get out there and enjoy yourselves." She said shooing us out to the dance floor.
She was meddling again, I could see it in her smile. She was just as mischievous as her son, not maliciously so but she knew what she was doing.
Loki cursed under his breath but led me out into the floor anyway. People moved out of his way quickly.
At first I thought it was because he looked so painfully regal, but after I caught some of the harsh whispers and cold stares I realized it was because he was hated among the people in this room.
Loki roughly pulled me into him and didn't look at me as we swayed.
The music was faster than the other few songs that had played, the swell of the music more passionate than the slow cheery music from before.
"He's probably going to kill us all any second now."
I heard the whisper drift across the room to us and knew it had to be someone close for us to hear it over the music.
Loki tensed but otherwise looked emotionless.
I was reminded once again that this was a man just like all others, with feelings and emotions.
I stepped closer then, and let my chest brush against his, my hands slid over his arms rather than hovering above them and he almost jumped at the change of contact.
"What are you doing?" He snapped.
"Just shut up and dance with me."
He pursed his lips but when a violin took center stage and started playing low and quick he led me into a deep back step, his thigh brushing the insides of mine.
He brought us back to our original point and the way he held me became instantly more intimate.
His hand held me at the waist, his fingers pressing into the dress so he could feel the curve of my body underneath. His other hand slid up my arm, over my shoulder and down my spine making my shiver.
A ghost of a smile played in his lips and that playful glint in his catlike eyes were back.
His hand came to a stop at the small of my back, pulling our midsections together in a way that I was sure wasn't appropriate.
My hand came to rest on his chest, reminding him we had eyes watching us, but I didn't push him away.
I could feel his heart hammering in his chest quickly and it was a relief that it was going as fast as mine.
We danced in sync, our feet moving in time with the violin and our bodies pressed together closer than we probably should have been.
He smiled at me and led me into a spin that I allowed. When I faced him again his hands slid back to my waist and lead me back into him, pulling me against him roughly.
My hands fisted in his black jacket holding onto him as his devastating beauty struck me.
The way he was looking at me right now, that couldn't be a game..right?
You couldn't fake the spark between us though we'd both did our best to rip it to pieces.
It wasn't okay, it was wrong for so many reasons but if he hadn't done what he'd done..would I seriously consider him as an option? Would he consider me?
The song ended with a long sweet high note, Loki's heart was still drumming away in his chest and I wondered if he could feel mine.
Others clapped for the musicians but we stayed like that, looking at each other, trapped.
"Loki-" I started.
"Well that was..something." Thor chuckled as he walked up.
Loki let me go and I cleared my throat.
"Well, the people wanted to see unified so that's what I gave them." I said shrugging and stepping away from his brother.
"Well you convinced me." Thor teased nodding at us.
"Right." Loki said stiffly not looking at me.
I glanced at him but he was already taking his leave and disappearing into the crowd.
"Hey." I called after him but was interrupted by a woman dressed in a purple dress who gushed about mine.
I watched Loki slip out of the hall and I tried to hurry the woman's conversation so I could find him.
I needed to know if he felt what I felt during that dance.
I needed to know if he did that somehow, if he was playing a trick on my mind.
I needed him to make fun of me or make me angry so I could stop wondering what the hell was going on.
