I walked into work and set my things down at my desk and clicked my computer awake.
My email was already open and I started to skim the unread ones but found that I wasn't paying attention, I was thinking about the clothes laid out on my bed waiting for me to get home and put them on.
Lilly had been adamant that I needed her help finding an ensemble and after she'd dressed me like a life size Barbie I had to admit that she knew her stuff when it came to first date attire. Lord knew how long it'd been since I'd been out on a date and she'd managed to put something beautiful together that was outside my comfort zone but just safe enough that I'd allow myself to wear it.
I closed out my emails and glanced at the book resting on my desk next to my things.
I had chosen, The Odyssey by Homer.
I'd read it in high school and it was renowned for it's literary work. It seemed to be in a time period that Loki would be familiar with.
I sighed, annoyed at myself for actually caring whether or not he'd like it, I should have grabbed any old book and brought it to him but I had found myself in the bookstore trying to find something to suit the temperamental god.
Better get it over with.
I picked up the book, tucked it under my arm and headed for his cell block.
::;
The familiar green hue greeted me as I walked into the paddock and he was in his usual spot, sitting on the bench looking bored as ever.
Evan saw me and gave me a small smile, I felt my heartbeat speed up and gave him one back.
When I looked back at Loki he was watching me.
"Took your sweet time."
"How about a thank you." I said holding the book up as I got closer.
Loki got up and walked to me, holding my eyes the entire time. It was eerie and I wasn't used to someone holding eye contact for so long.
I guess it came with being a prince, confidence and dominance at all times or something like that.
"What did you bring me?" He asked glancing at the book in my hands.
"It's called the Odyssey, it's about war and hero's, gods and goddesses. Should be right up your alley." I teased going to put the book in the slot.
I let out a frustrated breath of air when the book wouldn't fit.
"Does this get bigger?" I asked kneeling down and inspecting it.
I tried to jam the book through and Loki raised an amused eyebrow at my struggle.
The book was just to big to fit into the slot made for trays.
"Okay well.." I bit my lip trying to think of a way to get it to him.
"I guess you'll just have to come bring it to me." He said in a voice that I had no other way to describe other than enticing.
"You think I'm going to come in there?"
"If you want to hold up your end up the bargain then you're going to have to."
I frowned, was I crazy for actually considering entering the lions den?
His eyes flashed mischievously, sending me a silent challenge.
I felt a spark in my gut, a dangerous feeling and no mater how much I tried to deny it, it sent a thrill down my spine something akin to feeling alive.
He was challenging me, seeing if I was going to back down. If I would admit that something as small as cracking the door and tossing the book inside was to dangerous for a washed up con artist stuck in prison.
"Stand back."
The corners of his lips twitched up in an almost smile, he nodded at me and held his palms out in mock surrender and took a few steps back.
I walked around the side of the cell and reached for the keypad on the side but a hand grabbed my wrist.
"You're not seriously going to open that door?"
Evan looked at me with a serious look on his face.
"It's none of your business." Loki snapped.
"Making sure you don't escape is my business."
He lowered his voice and leaned in so only I could hear him.
"I can't let you do that, it's to dangerous, he's to dangerous. You could get hurt."
I gently pulled my hand out of his grasp.
"It'll be fine." I promised.
He stared at me for a moment, possibly trying to get me to change my mind.
"Don't get me fired." Was all he said before clicking the safety off his gun and moving to stand to the side of me.
My hands were steady as I pressed a few buttons, Evan cocked his gun and leveled it with Loki, ready to take a shot if needed.
Loki's eyes had a certain craze to them and if I'd been smarter I might have noticed.
"I'm trusting you." I said to him, as my fingers grazed the now unlocked door.
The cool metal slid along my fingers as I pushed the door open a fraction of an inch.
