"Is he going to be chained up?" I asked as the elevator descended into the ground.
"There's no need, the cell he's in was built for someone much stronger than him." Fury said confidently.
"Are you guys going to be coming in with me?" I asked picking at my fingernails nervously.
"No, he can't know Jane and I are involved. You'll be bringing him his meals, that's how we get you close to him. How to get him to talk is up to you." Fury explained.
"Tell him your from HR, maybe you're there to make sure he's being treated humanely?" Jane suggested.
"I don't know if I can do this." I admitted trying to take deep breaths.
"All you have to do is go in there and talk to him, he can't hurt you." She said taking my hand.
She had it completely backwards, I wasn't worried about him hurting me..I was worried I'd toss a gas bomb into his cell and watch him suffocate with a smile on my face.
I'd never felt hatred to this extreme, it was terrifying.
My heart drummed away in my chest at speeds it definitely wasn't designed to, making my head fuzzy.
When the elevator dinged it all but stopped completely.
This was it, I was going to bring Loki his dinner like he was a deranged pet mouse.
Janes hand was on the small of my back as she gently pushed me out of the elevator and slid something into my back pocket, but when I turned to look back the elevator doors were already closing.
I pulled the object out of my back pocket and found it was a small black cell phone. I clutched the hunk of plastic and stood frozen to my spot unable to move.
The phone vibrated lightly in my hand and I peeked down to see an open message displayed on the screen.
Walk to your right, go through the door and get his dinner tray. Take it to the intake slot on the cell, and the job starts. Good luck, we'll be watching.
I took a deep breath and walked where the phone had directed me, sure enough there was a gray door that swung both ways as I pushed on it. I entered a small kitchen where his meals must have been prepared. There was a tray already waiting for me to take it on the counter.
I eyed the brown plastic tray and its contents. The plate contained goopy creamed corn, baked beans, sliced hotdogs and a yellow hunk of something that I assumed was supposed to be cornbread.
I closed my eyes feeling nauseous and when I went to pick up the tray my hands shook.
"Come on Anna." I whispered to myself.
"He killed your brother. Don't get cold feet now."
My grip on the tray became more confident and I felt my back straighten with purpose as memories of a collapsed tunnel, fires raging up through the rubble..my own screams fueled my hatred and watered down the fear that gripped me.
When I walked out the green hue of the fish bowl like cell he was in cast an ominous glow around the chamber.
The god himself was sitting on the ground, his back pressed against the thick glass.
Loki made no moves to signal that he knew I was there but I knew he had to have heard the door swinging on creaky hinges and my footsteps echoing across the platform.
There were two guards standing on either side of the glass cell. Gun in hand and watching me walk closer.
To my surprise I recognized one of the them.
His glasses, his hazel eyes, the slightly square angle of his jaw..it was the same man I'd ran into the other day, sending his paperwork all over the floor.
I hadn't expected someone like him to be infantry.
He gave me a small nod as he seemed to recognize me back.
I supposed neither of us entirely looked like we belonged.
I noticed the corner of his lips twitch up as I examined him and tore my eyes away looking to the food distribution space.
I found the intake slot was right beside where Loki positioned himself against the cell.
My hands shook slightly as I pushed the tray into the slot, there was a sharp bang as a glass plate resealed the opening when the tray had made it all the way through.
"If you keep putting this vile food into my cell, I'm going to shove it down your throat and watch you choke on it."
Loki's voice made me jump a little, not only was it unexpected but I hadn't expected his voice to hold so much authority.
When there wasn't a response to his threat he grabbed the tray and threw it with such force the tray reached the other side of the cell, smacking into it and spraying food. He was standing now and spat words as he turned around.
"You pitiful midguardian men will bow before me and when you do you'll be presented with food such as this-"
His face was contorted with anger but froze mid threat, caught off guard by me.
"And if I'm not a man?" I asked crossing my arms.
He visually relaxed and a small a grin broke out on his face.
"And who might you be?" He asked crossing his own arms intrigued.
"The person in charge of bringing you the vile food from now on."
His eyes slowly roamed my body from head to toe, sizing me up. He kept that smirk on his face but his eyes had a dangerous glint to them.
The way they were watching me made me feel like the I was the mouse in the cage.
"What happened to the other guy?" Loki asked lifting an eyebrow, seemingly amused.
"Maybe you scared him away."
I wasn't positive that my voice was coming out even and indifferent the way I was intending it to.
My heart felt like it was going to beat right out of my chest and I felt red blooming on my cheeks the longer I stayed under his scrutinizing gaze.
The stories of him were scary, but the man himself was downright terrifying up close.
"Don't toy with me, who sent you." He snapped, his smirk replaced with a sneer and his voice loosing the playful edge it'd had moments ago.
This was it, the big lie that would make or brake this 'relationship'.
"I'm from HR, I'm here to make sure you're not being treated like an animal."
I should have left it at that but being me, I couldn't stop while I was ahead.
"But by the looks of it you're being treated exactly like you should be."
"What is HR?" He asked hotly.
"Human Resources, we represent human rights and the respectful treatment of all humans. Unfortunately it seems you have rights, even as a prisoner of war." My voice took on a bored tone, as if reading from a manuscript and I wanted to give myself a giant pat on the back.
"I'm not human." He spat looking at me with disgust.
"So you're saying you don't want to be treated with basic respect?"
He opened his mouth and then closed it, eyeing me curiously once again and if I had been keeping score, I'd have said that was a point for me.
"As if you could ever comprehend the basic respect that you should show me. You filthy human. Get the hell away from me."
I angrily pushed at the glasses on my nose, this was harder than I thought, not letting him get to me.
I had been keeping it short and simple, trying to keep my face blank.
If it wasn't for this glass, I'd have punched him in the square in the face.
"Fine. Enjoy your meal. Tell them to call me when you get tired of eating garbage and staring at a glass wall." I said spinning on my heel and walking away.
I felt his eyes on me as I walked to the elevator but kept my eyes forward as I waited. When the doors opened, it took all my strength to not sprint through them. When I walked in and turned to press the button for the fourth floor, his piercing green eyes still watched me. I put two fingers to my forehead and gave him a mock salute.
And for a second, it looked like he might hate me as much as I hated him.
When the doors finally closed I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and felt my knees go weak.
I leaned against the wall and hoped he wasn't aware how terrifying that had been for me.
