I woke up the next morning and cracked my eyes open slowly. The light from outside was pouring in my windows and casting itself over my body like some angelic blanket.
My head pounded at the temples and my stomach lurched painfully.
A piece of pizza was on the floor next to where my hand had been draped over the side of the couch and there were four bottles of wine on the table when I only remember there being two.
My eyes slid over to Lilly, still asleep but still somehow looking photo ready with my white faux fur blanket draped over her shoulders.
I raked my fingers though my hair and glanced at the clock while searching for my phone between the cushions.
I froze with my hand stuffed down in the couch, the time registering in my foggy brain.
It was eleven..I was beyond late for work.
"Shit shit shit."
I sprinted for my room and threw on a white button up shirt and navy slacks, trying to rolling up the sleeves of the mock silk material as fast as I could.
My feet slipped into my flats and I ran out into the living room shaking Lilly awake and telling her I had to go to work. She waved me away and grumbled for me to have a good day.
The sun abused my eyes as I opened my front door, but my feet stepped out into the world anyway, ready to brave the day.
::;
I ran through the revolving door and clocked in from my phone the second I'd cleared the entrance.
My butt flew into my chair causing it to roll backwards just as the phone rang, I scrambled for it cursing under my breath.
"Hello!" I said hoping my voice didn't sound like I'd been sprinting the whole way to work.
"How nice of you to join us, come to my office." Fury deadpanned.
I opened my mouth to respond but a tell tale click let me know he'd hung up.
The ride to the main floor was slower than normal, the sudden lurch of the metal box reaching the fourth floor seemed to take ages.
I was to nervous to enjoy walking through the field agents quarters and when I knocked gently on Fury's office door I thought the blood rushing through my ears might have blocked out the sound of him telling me to come in.
"Fury?" I asked cracking the door.
I was met with silence and stuck my nose in farther to peer around the door inside the dimly lit office.
It was empty..but hadn't he just called me up here?
I walked in and closed the door behind me glancing around the room, half expecting to find him sitting in one of the arm chairs with a drink in his hand, partially hidden in the shadows.
When he didn't make his presence known I paused in front of his desk.
A file lie open like he'd been interrupted while going over it and hadn't had a chance to put it away.
I bit my lip and leaned forward slightly to get a better look, listening pointedly for noises that would indicate I'd been caught snooping at confidential information.
A few pages were lazily stacked over each other, when I picked them up a photo fell out of the paper sandwich and came to a stop upside down in front of me. Using my finger to spin the picture right side up I leaned down to get a better look.
Shoulder length black hair, slightly wavy.
Green and black leather armor.
Curved horn helmet, a scepter clutched in his long fingers.
My blood ran cold as my body dumped adrenaline into it just at the mere photograph of him.
Piercing green eyes that were as cold as the day was long stared back at me.
Loki.
I gripped the photo and brought it closer to my eyes so I could see it better in the dim light.
He wore a smirk on that pale face of his, eyes practically glowing.
He was looking at Thor, who seemed to be yelling at him but it was hard to tell from the freeze frame.
"It's not nice to snoop."
The light flicked on and I whirled around putting the picture behind my back.
Jane and Fury stood in the doorway.
"Where were you? I thought you wanted to talk to me." I asked trying to divert attention from my obvious guilty face.
"Do you know who that is, in that picture that your holding?" Jane asked softly.
"Everyone knows who he is."
Fury walked to me and plucked the picture out of my hands holding it up for me to see.
"Hawkeye took this photo, said it was quite a sight to see two gods arguing like an old couple. To bad they have to keep feuding on our soil, almost wish we had someone to get the little details we've managed to miss, then maybe we could get that crazy son a bitch back to his rock and off ours."
"What did you want to see me about?" I asked raising an eyebrow at his cryptic speech.
"Thor is in Asgard right now, trying to bargain for Loki to return home. Odin won't make a decision yet because the Asgardian court wants to give him the death penalty." Jane said sitting in an arm chair.
So he'd called her after all, she didn't seem to happy about it though. Probably not the reunion she was hoping for.
"Good. I hope he gets it." I said full of conviction.
"I agree. But to get him back to la la land, we have to get him talking, Get information that we can use. I'm not sending him back until I know who he's in bed with." Fury said tossing the picture down onto his desk and leaning against it.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked eyeing them both.
"We'd like you to be our inside woman." Jane said, this time giving me a smile.
"Are you serious?"
Clashing emotions rose up like a tidal wave.
A real assignment, a chance to prove myself..but that man..that lunatic..I wasn't sure if I could face him.
"What's the job?" I asked directing the question to Fury.
"Try and get him to trust you, get him comfortable enough with you to loosen those locked lips of his and give us something we can use." Fury picked up the picture again and held it out to me.
I took the photo and gazed down at it, at that smug smirk on his face, hatred building like trapped smoke in my chest.
"Seems like the stakes are pretty high for a field test." I said glancing at the director.
"Thor doesn't want Fury in charge of the interrogation. He's not..a huge fan of SHEILD or it's agents." Jane said standing.
"But since Loki isn't welcome back on his own planet, he's stuck here so I don't really give a rats ass what Thor wants." Fury grunted.
Jane gave Fury a look that mirrored his annoyance.
"Loki's an Asgardian, so we have to compromise or the future king might hold a grudge." She said pointedly making Fury roll his eye.
She turned back to me and put a hand on my shoulder.
"And we did, compromise that is. Fury wanted someone already in SHEILD and I told Thor I trusted you. So, here we are."
She was sticking her neck out for me, for my chance to show my metal in the field.
I wanted it, I wanted it so bad that I was considering working with the tyrannical god down in the basement.
"Why does Thor even want him interrogated?"
Jane sighed and I could see the cogs in her brain working to come up with an answer that wouldn't give Fury to much free info. She might work for SHEILD but it wasn't for loyalty, it was so she could continue her research and stay close to the action regarding Asgard.
"He thinks..he might get some information that could help him save his brothers life."
I didn't like her answer, not one bit.
"I don't want to help save his life." I all but snarled.
Fury smirked, we were back in his territory now.
He stepped in front of Jane and gave me a knowing look.
"You want him to suffer? You want him to pay for what he did? Then get in there and get me the info I need to get him convicted by the men in the clouds or whatever." He said shaking his hand in the direction of of the sky.
I thought of my brother, half frozen in a chamber suspending him in the limbo between life and death.
Like a coma that keeps his body pristine in case he ever decides to come back.
Apparently our families went way back, Fury never elaborated but when my brother and I followed our parents footsteps and joined the organization, we had a special place in the usualy distant heart of the director.
And now Devin had a special place to keep his body until one day he took up to much space and they took him off ice.
I met Fury's hard eyes and he smiled seeing my resolve .
"Okay, I'm in. For Devin."
