This is an official statement from Hamas:

This land is a land of heroism and sacrifices. Nothing comes for free. Before October 7, the occupation was preparing for a crushing attack in Gaza after the end of their holidays, but the resistance obtained leaked information about the occupation’s readiness to launch an attack on Gaza that would force people to immigrate and move beyond Gaza. But the resistance  It was quick to surprise this cowardly occupation, and chose to attack all the leaders of the occupation in the Gaza Division, “this division that has tortured our people and abused our children over the years, abused those stationed at Al-Aqsa Mosque, killed hundreds of Palestinians in the return marches, daily raids on the homes of our families and people in the West Bank, and raids and desecration on a daily basis.”  To Al-Aqsa Mosque until Al-Aqsa was approaching the implementation of the plan to demolish Al-Aqsa. The resistance was able to kill these soldiers, captured dozens of them, and obtained dangerous plans and information that the occupation intended to implement in Gaza only days after October 7. The occupation considers October 7 a day that its defeated army has not witnessed since its inception.  “We wrote this text for you for those who would like to know the reason for the war, so that you know well that Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the rest of the Palestinian factions are keen to protect our people, and for almost 4 years they have been patient and trying to avoid any escalation or any war in order to avoid any aggression against Gaza, but the occupation was forced and began killing people.”  Our people are everywhere, and everyone began to understand that the resistance was in deep silence until this great day came, which was a historic joy in the history of the Palestinian people and a great revenge on the soldiers, officers and generals of the Israeli occupation army, and not as the Israeli occupation does by killing civilians, children and women in the Gaza Strip.  May God bless our resistance and our heroic mujahideen, and we will not forgive anyone who makes mistakes against a mujahid or a political leader in the resistance factions. We were all wrong when we thought the resistance was over, but the resistance was preparing well for a day like this, which will be black in the history of the Israeli occupation.
