Naire Carter
New York City, New York

Naire walked beside Sakina as they hurried to the library, they had an exam coming up soon to test their knowledge on politics in the US. It was in a couple of days and they had to cram everything because they hadn't been preparing, it was a surprise from their lecturer, luckily it didn't go towards their grade or GPA but that didn't mean that they could slack off.

As they walked up the stairs towards the library, Naire put her arm over Sakina's shoulder and pulled her in for a kiss—at least she tried to. Sakina dodged the kiss because of her reflexes but she quickly realised what she'd done. Her face quickly looked apologetic towards Naire, who simply looked confused.

"Are you mad at me or sum?" Naire asked, she stopped walking and simply stared at Sakina, ignoring the other people who walked around them.

Sakina shook her head no, making Naire even more confused, "I'm just not a fan of PDA."

Naire's brows furrowed as she listened to Sakina, since when wasn't she a fan of PDA? They'd only recently become exclusive so they hadn't been out in public together, Naire didn't really understand because Sakina was pretty touchy in private or when no one was around. Unless it was something else...

"You'on like PDA or you'on like kissing women in public?" Naire asked, it came out harsher than she'd intended but that was what she'd wanted to ask regardless.

Deep down, she hoped that it wasn't the latter. She'd already gone through a relationship where her partner was ashamed of her, constantly fearing that people would judge her. Naire just wanted to be able to love who she wanted to love and for them to fully love her back. She hoped Sakina simply didn't like PDA and that there was no deeper meaning.

Sakina sighed, "I've just never done this before, Naire. I've been closeted for 18 years, this is all new to me."

Naire nodded, "I understand, ma. I've just been through a relationship where they only wanted to love me in secret and I can't deal with that anymore."

Sakina smiled sadly, "I don't wanna love you in secret, I've just seen things happen to other people for being out and it scares me."

Naire bumped her shoulder into Sakina before they walked into the library, she replied, "Take your time, people gon' hate and judge regardless of what you do so you might as well live your life."

Taking in her partner's words, Sakina gently took Naire's hand and entwined it with her's. She pulled Naire forwards to an empty table. Even though her heart was racing out of fear of being judged, she didn't want Naire to ever feel like she was something that Sakina could ever be ashamed of.

Although Sakina hadn't experienced homophobia, she'd seen the effects of it firsthand. Those fears were rooted deeply inside of her, the trauma was massive and sometimes it weighed down on her but she was going to keep pushing. For Naire's sake.

Who would most likely be her first love.

Nia absentmindedly tapped the pen on the till as she sat in the shop, she couldn't get Salvador out of her head. He had been someone that she'd worried about for a long time and she'd wanted to find him too, but eventually, she'd just moved on. A huge part of her was rejoicing, he was alive and well. Even though he was clearly gang banging, Salvador looked nothing like the boy he was 5 years ago—who had no will to live.

A small part of her was worried. A Latin King and the blood of a Rolling 30 Crip being seen together was like setting off a bomb. It would mean war, meaning that a lot of the men and boys she'd grown up with, would die and become killers too. Nia didn't want that, now that she knew Salvador was alive and well, she could close that chapter of her life and move on.

Her phone began to vibrate on the till, she looked at the name and sighed as she answered. She'd saved Salvador under the name 'Sam' just in case her brothers were nearby. If she wasn't careful, this could all get very messy.

"Yes, Salvador?" Nia folded her arms as she stood up straight, she didn't know what this man had to say now but she'd clearly softened up on him.

"Just lettin' you know that I'm pulling up." Salvador revealed, his voice was smooth and deep even through the phone, Nia couldn't help but bite her lip when she heard him speak.

"Wait, what?" She asked, what he'd said had sunk in but by then, Salvador had already hung up.

Deciding to do some stalking, Nia went on instagram to find out something. She needed to see what type of person Salvador was, even back then they were still strangers and she had to be safe.

As soon as she heard the bell jingle, Nia turned off her phone and put in on the counter then looked up to see Salvador with a cap on. She couldn't help but smile when she saw him, he walked up to her and just looked at her.

"Damn, what I gotta do to get a hug 'round here?" Salvador asked, staring straight into Nia's eyes.

She rolled her eyes before opening the door to let him come behind the till. Salvador slyly wrapped his arms around her waist as Nia went on he tiptoes to embrace him, she sighed as they hugged and she could feel her heart racing slightly. Things were getting very dangerous and very quickly.

"Let's be friends, Nia." Salvador suddenly said as he pulled away, Nia's brow raised at him.

She shook her head before facing back to the front, watching as a customer walked around the store. There was no way she was becoming friends with a Latin King, regardless of their history. Salvador simply stared at her, his expression was solemn as Nia ignored him.

"Look, I'm glad you're alive and thank you for coming back to come check on me but you know why we can't be friends. I ain't risking my relationship with my brothers and my own life for this." Nia explained, glancing at Salvador who nodded knowingly.

"You right." He replied, pushing his hat further down before he stepped out of the till section, "Imma leave you alone now, Nia." He finally said.

Even though this was what Nia wanted, it hurt to see him walk out the door.
