Chapter Forty-Two
-Captain D-Bag-

"You made him head butt her?" Kathy stared at me.
"I just tapped the trigger. I was more hoping to scald him, but him head butting her and smelling like koala vomit until he showers next, works for me," I shrugged.
"Who are you? Because you're magnificent and not the Lucy I thought I knew." Her grin was bigger than Texas as she cackled with glee. "I'm so glad you're giving him what he's dishing out to you," Kathy wiped at her eyes, still giggling.
"He had her call me buttercup," I told her, in a small voice and all traces of humor left her face.
"He didn't," She demanded, letting me know it was actually a big deal; I was allowed to be upset.
"They were walking towards me, her under his arm and he whispered in her ear and as they passed me she said 'hey buttercup'," I told her and the angry look in her eyes was satisfying.
"Why is he being so cruel, what does he get out of completely fucking destroying you?" She asked, more talking to herself, than me. She sounded disappointed, to be honest. Weren't we all? "Something isn't adding up and I can't figure it out. He leaves you, but does it spectacular and public and very humiliating way and then starts throwing daggers, left and right," Kathy speculated. "He's getting something out of this and I can't figure it out."
"I don't know," I sighed, kind of wanting to change the subject because it made me feel like crap. "But I felt I won the battle today. He smells like a koala, and she hopefully needs a trip to the dentist. Call me buttercup again, bitch," I muttered darkly.
"Oh, I like you angry," Kathy grinned at me. "We're going to The Hub tonight. Are you coming?" She asked and I shrugged.
"Got nowhere else to be."

Being a Thursday night, unless they had something incredibly major coming up, everyone was at The Hub.
Kathy was currently playing a bar game with Tom and some of his friends, Taylor was on the complete opposite side of the room, completely ignoring me. I was mostly here to be a spectator; I didn't have it in me to let the night grow into something messy.
A cheer went up as someone finally won the game Kathy was playing and I watched with amusement.
"Who's your friend, Kathy?" I heard and I turned my head to see one of Tom's friends smiling at me.
"Lucy, and I can speak for myself," I replied, returning his smile. He was obviously a footballer, along with Tom. They had the same footballer vibe. Tanned, lean, put together well.
"Do you also buy drinks for yourself?" He asked, grinning. I picked up my glass and emptied it in a swallow.
"I try not to," I bit my lip and made myself see where this went. He was a handsome guy and obviously charismatic. We maintained eye contact as we smiled at each other for a long charged moment. He did have lovely blue eyes, they weren't maple syrup brown, but maple syrup brown didn't want me anymore. So, lovely blue eyes, it was.
"Perhaps you should come help me carry the drinks back to the table," He suggested and I grinned, starting to stand up.
"It can be very hard to carry a drink in each hand that far," I nodded as he made his way around the table.
"Tell me about it, the coach would murder me for such heavy lifting without proper supervision," He shook his head as I laughed. Also, confirming my thoughts about being a footballer. "My name is Declan," He offered his hand.
"Lucy, but you already know that," I grinned as I shook his hand.

"So, what's the deal?" Declan asked as we waited at the bar to be served.
"Two for one tonight, I think," I replied and he laughed.
"I meant with you," He shook his head. "I've seen you around here a couple of times, but never by yourself," He murmured, eyes shining brightly at me. I had to swallow the groan, I so didn't want to talk about it right now, 'cause I still don't even know what happened.
"Change is inevitable, I guess," I shrugged, grinning with a vibe I was seriously faking.
"So, you're not here with anyone tonight?" He asked, confirming that this flirting could lead somewhere. I sucked my cheek in as I studied him, I say no and it makes it real. I say yes and there's a ninety nine percent change I'm just lying to myself. As much as it hurts I make myself shake my head, indicating no. I'm not here with anyone tonight. I wish I was, but I'm not.
"Cool," Declan grins. "Me neither."
