I always found fairytales to be the ultimate betrayal.

You grow up with these wonderful parents that tell you a story about a princess that falls in love with a prince who could do no wrong but each happily ever after has a dark story hidden behind the magic.

Think the little mermaid for instance, in the film you see Ariel make a deal with a sea witch named Ursula who converts her into a human temporarily in exchange for her voice and then the witch puts her voice inside of a sea shell but in Andersen's telling of the story, the witch silences the little mermaid by cutting off her tongue.

Cinderella is another good example of things taking a darker turn, in the 1950 film there is a stunning woman who has been enslaved by her evil stepmother but gets a chance at happiness when her fairy godmother intervenes. The godmother then transforms Cinderella's ragged clothing attire into an elegant gown so she can attend the royal ball and meet prince charming. The magic however only lasts until midnight and she ends up fleeing, leaving nothing but her glass slipper in her place.

The prince ends up finding it and goes searching high and low for the mystery woman who left her slipper behind. The evil step sisters both try on the slipper but their feet are too big and the shoe fits Cinderella just right so she ends up marrying the prince and getting her happy ending.

The 1812 version of the story is much more horrific, rather than the story ending in the evil step sisters begging for forgiveness, the evil stepmother instead hands a knife to the eldest of the two daughters and orders her to cut her own toe off, the prince is fooled into thinking she was the real woman who lost the slipper and rides off with her.

Well that is until two talking pigeons alert him to her odd blood-soaked shoe, but that isn't the last of the evil step sisters plans.

The younger stepdaughter tries to fool him by cutting off her heel, but then the pigeons, who apparently can't mind their own damn business, alert the prince once again about the strange finding.

When the prince finally identifies the girl of his dreams, the two evil step sisters with some sick obsession with the prince decided to attend the wedding hoping to curry some form of favor, but then the pigeons, who are the real stars of the story, blinded them by plucking out their eyes.

There is always going to be some form of grim story behind the daisies but even if you look at the brighter side that Disney tried to show you, Snow white was fourteen and Prince Florian was thirty-one years old. These are the couples that parents tried to use as an example of what true love really is.
