''Come on! We have to do this before curfew!''
''I know, I know!''
''Can't we slow down a bit?''
Scorpius Malfoy had been leading the group, with Teddy Lupin and Albus Potter behind him. Ever since they've arrived back at Hogwarts, Scorpius has been on about his father and Teddy's mother.
Albus seemed intrigued. His father spoke a few words of Draco Malfoy and a few of Y/n Granger. But he didn't know that they had history. Or, that's what they thought. It was just after dinner and the three of them were currently running towards the Library, Scorpius' last place of hope.
He had tried asking the Professors, but they all seemed forgotten. Whenever Scorpius had asked, they would talk about the two, how much they hated one another. Then they'd trail off onto another topic. At least, that's what happened with Slughorn. He spoke about how Y/n was in his small group of successors.
Teddy tried looking for any clues back at home. Anything that would give away the sign that his mother might have just been infatuated with his best friends father. But no to avail. He couldn't find anything about him.
''No!'' Scorpius shouted to Albus' earlier question. ''We have to get to the Library before we run out of time.''
''Why can't we just go tomorrow? I'm kind of tired, you know.''
''Because I'd rather spend my time in the Library finding nothing then not looking at all.''
''He has a good point.'' Teddy agreed with Scorpius, laughing at Albus' annoyed face.
''Fine.'' Albus agreed, but only because they're his friends. ''But we're not staying there all afternoon.''
And that's exactly what they did.
When they entered the Library, it was mainly scarce. People didn't usually visit the Library at a time like this. The Librarian greeted the three but gave them a stern look, one which they did not see.
Scorpius carefully picked a few books off the shelves when he walked by. He could practically remember the whole Library just by memory. Teddy had walked behind Scorpius, glancing at the books but not picking any off the shelves. Albus had picked up one, one which he thought would turn to be useful.
The three of them sat down at a table, Teddy taking a book from the large pile that Scorpius had gathered. Over the past few hours, Scorpius had gone through at least five books, Teddy went through two and Albus, well, he fell asleep on the second page of his book.
Growing frustrated, Scorpius groaned and slammed his book closed. He internally apologized to the book. Albus jolted awake from the sound, rubbing his eyes and mumbling incoherent words. Teddy jumped, wincing at the echoing sound.
''There has to be something.'' Scorpius was practically begging Merlin above to give him anything. Any clue that would lead to his father's past.
''Lemme ask you this.'' Albus rubbed the last bit of tired away from his eyes. ''Why do you want to know about it so much? It happened years ago, I'd be surprised if anyone remembered.''
Teddy also wanted to know, but hadn't said anything.
Scorpius sighed and slumped in his seat, his back hitting the back of the chair.
''Ever since my Mum died, Dad hasn't been the same.'' He started, nervously playing with his fingers in his lap. ''He seems sad all the time. I hate seeing him that way. But when we went back home, Dad didn't seem so sad anymore. He seemed happy. Happier than I've ever seen him before.''
Teddy and Albus shared a look before looking back at Scorpius.
''I at least wanted to know the reason why my Dad was so happy. Maybe then I could, possibly, try and keep it that way.'' Scorpius sighed, dropping his hands. ''Plus, this is fun.''
Albus chuckled from across the table. ''You're right, this is fun.'' Teddy nodded, smiling at Scorpius. ''And I get that you want to make your Dad happy. I really do.'' And he did. Albus had been trying to make his own father proud for a while. ''That's why we're going to continue to look until we find what we need.''
Scorpius smiled gratefully at Albus.
''You know, my Mum seemed happy, too.'' Teddy then spoke up, looking down at the table. ''She's been happy many times before, but not like when I seen her during break. It felt... nice. Nice to know that she was happy on her own and not feeling like she needed to be happy.''
Teddy looked up at Scorpius.
''If your father is the cause of that, I'd like to keep it that way.''
''Well, let's get searching.''
''They have a history, I know it.''
''Right you are, Mr. Malfoy.'' The three kids jumped, pausing whatever book they had been flipping pages on. The room was mainly dark, the corners being shadowed in. Out of the corner, Headmistress McGonagall stepped into the light. ''Your father and your mother-'' She gestured between Scorpius and Teddy. ''-do have a history.''
''They do?'' Scorpius asked enthusiastically. McGonagall nodded, standing beside the table.
McGonagall gave a nod with her eyes closed for a moment.
''You wouldn't happen to be able to tell us, would you?'' Teddy asked, practically reading Scorpius'thoughts.
The Headmistress glanced at the three first years.
''You know, it's almost curfew.''
''We'll go straight to bed if you tell us.'' Scorpius compromised, leaning forward in his chair with anticipation. Albus chuckled at his friend from across the table.
''All right.'' McGonagall gave in, sitting down on a bench settled against the wall behind her. The three little boys kept their gazes on the Headmistress, trying to sit more comfortably in their seats. ''Where to begin?''
''Yay, story time with McGonagall.'' Albus joked, earning a laugh from the other three.
''Now, where to start...'' She trailed off.
Scorpius was quick to speak. ''How did they meet?''
''Well, they met like any other Hogwarts student on their first day. Though, they weren't so fond of each other then.''
''You mean, my father hated her?'' Scorpius asked, raising a brow.
McGonagall shrugged. ''Back then, that's how I was expecting it to be.''
''But why?'' Scorpius practically jumped from his seat.
Albus then spoke. ''Because of my dad, duh.'' He rolled his eyes at the mention of his father. ''Your father and mine were never friends back then. Hell, let alone nice to one another.''
''Albus is right.'' McGonagall continued. ''His father almost killed Draco once. Dear, if Snape hadn't stepped in-''
This was new information to Scorpius. ''WHAT?'' He stood up, the chair falling to the ground with the force. ''Harry Potter, The Chosen One, almost killed my father?''
The Headmistress nodded again.
''Sorry 'bout that.'' Albus scratched the back of his neck in shame.
Scorpius turned to Albus. ''It's okay, Al. You're not the one who did it. Plus, it was years ago. My father is fine now.'' The small blonde had taken a few deep breaths, picking up his chair and sitting back down. Albus still sitting in shame for his father's past actions.
''What about my Mum?'' Teddy asked, ready to hear more about the person who had raised him.
''Miss Granger knew everyone, it seemed.'' McGonagall gave a light-hearted chuckle. ''She was heartwarming, a charm to have in class, truly. Even Severus had grown a soft spot for the girl.''
''Snape?'' Albus asked, seeing as his middle name was Severus.
''The one and only.'' Albus smiled at her words. ''Your mother did a lot of things. Whether that ranged between Quidditch or her Lycanthropy. Though, the Tri-Wizard Tournament had hit a soft spot for her.''
''I read about that...'' Scorpius said, glancing between the other three. ''Three tasks, four competitor's. You-Know-Who returned that year, didn't he? Killed Cedric Diggory.''
''Yes, he did.'' McGonagall placed a hand over her heart, trying to keep back the threatening tears. ''It took a toll on everybody.''
''You said that they hated each other,'' Scorpius recalled. ''What happened between them?''
McGonagall looked up a bit, recalling what left she had known. ''I believe it started in fourth year. You know, Dumbledore always predicted something between those two. After fourth year they went back to hating each other.''
''What? Why?''
''Well, to follow the others, of course.'' Her words just confused the three boys. ''The Malfoy's were a proud family and still are. Just less harsh then they were before. Your father's father, Lucius Malfoy, had expectations for his son. And as you should know, he didn't like anyone below him.''
''Half-bloods and Muggleborns.'' Albus spoke out.
McGonagall nodded while Scorpius looked at the ground with furrowed brows.
''So, they went on to hide that they were infatuated with one another. Everybody believed it. Except a few of their friends who kept quiet about it.''
''How do you know about it?'' Teddy asked, his head laid on his arms that were crossed and settled on top of the table.
McGonagall smiled. ''Dumbledore always liked to know a little bit about everyone.''
The three boys shared a look, wondering if they should be scared or not.
''So,'' Scorpius was the first to speak. ''My father-''
''-and my Mum-''
''-they were... a thing?''
McGonagall hummed in response.
''The battle was where everything had fell. She left and didn't return. The first thing I've heard from her in 19 years was Mr. Lupin attending Hogwarts.''
''Did you know my parents?'' Teddy asked, sitting up from against the table.
''I knew your father and the others. Sirius Black, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew.''
The three of them scrunched their noses at the last name.
''Just exactly how old are you?'' Albus muttered, squinting at the Headmistress.
She didn't get mad, instead, she laughed and stood up from her seat in the bench. ''I feel that is a question that strays from the topic.'' She brushed down the robes she wore. ''Now, seeing as it is just a few minutes from curfew, I suggest that the three of you get to bed. You have classes in the morning.''
''We will, thank you Headmistress.'' Scorpius thanked gratefully, stacking the books on the table. Teddy and Albus shared their goodbye with the Headmistress before she had walked away.
That night, Scorpius and Albus went to the Slytherin Common Room while Teddy went to the Hufflepuff Common Room. It sucks that they were in different houses, but they didn't let that get between them. After all, a Slytherin fell in love with a Gryffindor in these very walls.
Scorpius went to bed that night, ranting about his theories to Albus. Albus laid in bed with his hands behind his head, a faint smile as he listened to his friends words. He didn't try and stop Scorpius, he would just keep talking.
Teddy sat in his bed, reading a book he had borrowed from the Library. It wasn't anything important, just a book that he liked to read for fun. But he couldn't help but wonder what it was like back then. Maybe his Mum could tell him more than McGonagall had, all he had to do was ask.
The three boys went to sleep that night, all content with the information that McGonagall had told them previously.
