It had been centuries since the Volturi ever truly celebrated any holiday. The perks of immortality meant that the holidays didn't really carry much meaning as they did to most humans. The more years spent dwelling upon such trivial days start to waste away the excitement of it all. Yet, sitting on the plane, adjacent to Demetri, Felix felt that same childhood excitement bubbling under the surface of his skin. Anticipation nagging at his attention, annoying the mightily hell out of his friend.
"Felix, for the love of God, what is with you today? You hate the holidays and you utterly loathe the Cullens, why in all the Gods' names are you squirming in your seat as if you're going to burst?" The tracker snapped, irritated over the fact he was yet to win in their little game of chess. The oversized brute merely grumbled in response, itching to know the answer himself.
After what happened with resume, or whatever the half breed child is called. The Cullen's had been set on inviting the main Volturi members to their household as a way to mend the bridge that was once burnt. Aro had greedily accepted, in not only hopes of rekindling his friendship with Carlisle but to also convince his children, the powerful ones, to join (much to everyone else's dismay).
It was the evening of Christmas eve when the Volturi walked up the driveway of the Cullens house, snow flurries fluttering down around them. Even in a cold, dirty, isolated town such as Forks, the white frost coating made everything seem angelic. The dying light ricochetting off of the light falling snow, casting a sombre glow everywhere.
The guards had seen various ways people seemed to celebrate Christmas; lights, food, alcohol and family. Yet the Cullens seemed to think inviting werewolves was a worthy substitute, much to everyone else's disgust. Despite the overpowering smell of wet mutt, something sweet filled the air.
Felix turned from where he stood by the living room entrance, to see you. The light radiating from the fireplace cast a gentle glow against your skin, making you seem ethereal.
He was frozen, the little beauty before him making him weak in the knees. You turned, eyelashes fluttering slowly as your gaze fixed onto Felix. And as if a string had snapped between the two of you, he knew he'd forever be bound to you. The complete and utter love that consumed him felt so warm, he thought he could've been human once more.
A cough snapped him out of his trance. In those moments he didn't seem to see you snuggled up against someone, his arm draped around you as you huddled into his side.
You looked to him, your eyes widened as you looked between the stranger who seemed so familiar to you, feeling as if you have known him your whole life and back to the man you have known your whole life. Paul's grip on you tightened as he glared at the tall giant by the door.
Your eyes shifted back to the stranger who seamlessly caught your attention. Your eyes widened when you realised what you were doing, adverting your eyes back to your boyfriend.
Felix tilted his head towards Marcus, whose eyes were already on him. A small fond smile painted across his lips as he nodded towards him. His head snapped right back to the mutt whose arms were wrapped around you, trying his hardest to hide his snarls.
There was one tiny secret about Felix that people seemed to miss; he loved a good challenge. And the mere thought of losing his mate to a mutt of all thing did not sit right with him at all.
With every opportunity he got, he made himself known to you, sending you small smiles and inconspicuous winks, adoring the blush that would bloom across your cheeks.
"Well, my friend, it seems you have met your match," Demetri smirked towards his tall friend, taking great entertainment in the scowl that flittered across his face. Felix could've strangled the tracker right then and there. "Shut up, D."
"Ah, it seems as if your little mate has gotten up to get a drink." He nodded towards the kitchen to where he spotted your retreating back. His dead heart jolting at the opportunity, following you into the pristine kitchen. He looked back to see your mutt busy talking amongst his other gangly beasts on the couch, seizing the moment to have you to himself.
You sat upon the bench, legs swinging absentmindedly as you took small sips from your mug. You turned from facing the window, jumping slightly at the sight of Felix. "Sorry, Mio cara, I did not mean to startle you."
"No, it's quite alright. You'd think I'd get used to it by now," you chuckled, bringing the mug back to your lips. Felix just stood there simply admiring you, a ghost of a smile decorated his lips as his eyes raked you up and down. "I must confess something, mio cara. You are quite the beauty."
Your cheeks completely flushed, causing Felix to chuckle at how much you looked like a tomato. "Oh, thank you, you're not bad yourself," you mutter from behind your mug. A smug smile broke out across his face as the two of you continued to stare at one another. Your heart beating rapidly inside your chest as your eyes wandered over him. The pull which felt as if you were tethered to him felt confusing yet familiar as he stood before you.
You jump off the bench, draining your mug and rinsing it, "I think I should go back to the lounge room, it's quite chilly in here." The stranger before you nodded, jerking his head to the door. You walked out the room with him trailing behind you, your hands trembling as you took your seat beside Paul.
All of a sudden you felt wrong. Being in the embrace of the man you've grown up with and have cared for, for years felt odd. Your sudden change in mood seemed to draw in Paul's attention, his focus shifting from his previous conversation to you. "You okay, Y/n?"
You couldn't answer, your stomach dropping as you looked into his eyes. You nodded, resting your head on his shoulder, closing your eyes. What was happening to you?
"Well, that's a bit of a problem." A voice bluntly said from the top of the stairs. All of you then looked up, Edwards red hair flickering across his forehead as his gaze shifted between the three of you. Edward muttered something that everyone seemed to catch but you. Paul tensed from behind you, "no."
He stood abruptly, pulling you harshly with him. You winced at his grip, a snarl sounding from somewhere behind you. You turned to the stranger, who now stood over you, his red eyes glaring so intently down at Paul. "Let go of her, mutt."
Paul didn't, he just continued to stare up at the giant, his gaze shifting from the two of you. "Paul," Carlisle spoke.
"Please come step outside with me," Paul's mouth twitched, rage and disgust clear as day in his gaze. He simply let go of you, walking off with Carlisle with Edward in tow.
"Are you alright, little one?" You looked up into the worried eyes of the giant before you. "Yeah, I should be okay, thank you though." You smiled at him, rubbing your arm where Paul had gripped it. You knew he didn't mean it, his anger sometimes getting the better of him. He had never hurt you before, never taking his anger out on you, but this was different, he had never done this.
"Let me see," his voice gently as his large hand reached out, "please."
You nodded, letting him roll up your sleeve. A faint red mark left in the wake of Paul harsh grip made Felix snarl, his eyes darkening. He placed his cold hand upon the mark, the cool somehow made you heat up, his touch alone tinting your cheeks red.
"I'm Y/n," your voice coming out in a whisper as you analysed every feature of the man before you. "Felix."
For someone of his height and width, you marvelled at how gentle he was. How his sudden flirty attitude had flipped into worry mode made you smile. "Are you sure you are okay?"
You placed your hand upon him, smiling warmly at him. "I'm certain, thank you for your kindness."
The night seemed to stretch as everyone started arriving. Originally it was just you, Jacob and Paul but now the rest of the pack had arrived. The other people, who you learned to be the Volturi, stuck to themselves. On occasions you would catch Felix's gaze on you, your cheeks reddening under his crimson eyes.
Paul had eventually returned, pressing a kiss to the of your head, mumbling apologise. Your head was spinning, your mind buzzing as you looked around the room. You loved Paul, you truly did. You grew up with him, he was your best friend. Yet even before tonight, your relationship had never really felt right. You knew of vampires and how they had mates, and every time that thought entered your head you couldn't help the butterflies that coiled in the pit of your stomach. How your mind wandered straight back to Felix.
A cold hand grazed your forearm, pulling you from your thoughts. Edward stood beside you, nodding at you, his eyes trailing from your to Felix. "You are correct. If I were you, I'd talk to Paul."
"Talk to me about what?" His stoic face appeared in front of you, his eyes swirling unknown with emotions. You turned to Edward who only gave you an encouraging smile. You were slightly shocked, Edward was never this helpful. His smile into a mini glare, your eyes widened realising he heard you. "Y/n knows what to talk to you about and I think you know as well."
You nodded your head towards the door, signally for Paul to walk. You followed behind him, catching the eye of Felix who tilted his head at you. You gave him a small smile, shaking your head.
Once outside on the porch, you shut the door, turning to face your boyfriend. "Don't Y/n. I know what you're going to say, I'm not stupid. I know what happened between you and that leech."
"Don't talk of them like that, and yes but you are still my best friend Paul. I don't want to lose you. Especially like this," you sighed. You could feel your nerves slowly ebb away. Muttering a small thank you to Jasper, hoping Edward could pass it on.
"No, I'm sorry I don't think I can." His nose wrinkled in disgust. You reached out for his hand only for him to wank it away, acting as if you burned him. You recoiled into yourself, tears glossing over your eyes.
"Paul, what do you mean?" You whispered. You knew everyone could probably hear you but as of right now you didn't care. "You know what I mean, Y/n. I came here for the pack, you know how I feel about them and the fact that you're now mated to one? I just can't." Paul spat.
You were well versed on how much werewolves and vampires never got along and you knew that. But Paul had always been somewhat tame when it came to the Cullens, especially knowing how close you were with Alice.
Paul started shaking, face tinting red as his features contorted to one of rage. You stepped forward despite knowing you shouldn't. "Paul, plea-"
"No." He said, looking at you in disgust. "It doesn't even matter, you aren't even my imprint so there's really no point."
You stepped back, shocked. "What does that mean?" Before he could answer, a hand wrapped around your arm. You looked up to see Sam towering over you, his eyes drilling into paul. "Paul, leave. Go cool off. Now."
With that Paul stormed off, his retreating back disappearing with the white frosted trees.
Sam looked at you, eyes glazed with guilt. "Sam," you said in warning. He sighed, looking torn. "What is an imprint?"
"You know how vampires have mates? Yeah, um, imprints are very similar. They are what we call our mates, like what Emily is to me and Nessie to Jacob." You took in a breath, steadying your breathing. Nodding your head, you spoke quietly, "so paul was with me knowing he would find his imprint and leave? Sam, why would you let him do that?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know. Come on, Y/n your nose is going red, let's get you inside. Or would you want me to take you home?" You didn't say anything, you just simply walked away.
The warmth of the Cullens house hit you, soothing the ache now growing in your chest. You didn't go anywhere near the living room, opting for the bathroom. Your face was now very much red, your lips cracked from the cold. Cracking the door open, you slipped inside, eloping yourself in the darkness the room gave.
Flipping the switch, you let a small squeak at your appearance. Your hair was tangled and angled in various ways you hadn't styled it in. Eyes tinted pink from either the effort of not crying or the cold, you didn't know.
A feather-light knock sounded from the door, the wooden slab sliding open gently to reveal Felix. You cocked an eyebrow at him as she asked to come in. "What if I was on the toilet?"
He let out a chuckle, shaking his head. "Trust me, little one, I would have heard you and I wouldn't have entered."
You turned back towards the mirror, wetting your hands to wipe your face. The pressure of a hand forced you to turn around. "I heard your conversation and just wanted to make sure you were okay." You gave him a tight-lipped smile, your eyes stinging once more.
You never knew werewolves had soulmates as vampires did. Your heart ached at the betrayal of what Paul had done, knowing you'd never be his. But given that the two of you were best friends, you'd thought he'd at least want to stay that way; friends. Apparently not.
"Yeah," you whispered, looking down at your hands, "I'll be okay." The tear that glazed over your eyes fuzzed your vision. You blinked them away, small tears trailing down your face.
You felt arms gently wrap around you, spinning you around so your face was pressed into his chest. His sudden comfort calmed you, his lips to your ear whispering sweet words of comfort to you. You wrapped your arms around him, basking in the feeling of security he gave as he held you. Your arms couldn't even reach around the width of him so you opted for clutching the sides of his shirt. He embraced with such delicacy you would've thought yourself to be made of porcelain but didn't question it, you just held onto him.
Something clicked with you. This, this feels right; every word muttered and every soft squeeze Felix offered you felt as if it were the most natural thing in the world. And after a few more moments, he pulled back, lifting you up onto the bench to where he helped you clean yourself. Running a warmly wet towel over your eyes, his other hand resting upon your thigh. "Come on, Mio cara, if he can't see the amazing person he just lost then that is his fault. It's Christmas Eve is it not? Let us go enjoy it." You nodded, allowing him to lift you from the bench but instead of putting you on the floor, he simply sped out of the room with you in his arms. You appeared in the room where the rest of his coven lingered, well away from the werewolves who sat in the other room. Felix just sat you down on his lap, arm around your stomach as he leaned back. Everyone else turned to him, rolling their eyes at the smug expression on his face while your cheeks just reddened. A man appeared beside you, eyeing you with a smile as he sat down. "Felix, my friend, your mate is rather beautiful." Your already red tinted cheek flushed even more at his words, a scowl erupting from Felix, whose arm only tightened around you. "Oh, thank you..."
"Demetri. At your service, darling." Felix then sat up, "alright, stop flirting with my mate, you bastard." Demetri leaned back, grinning, "I was doing no such thing."
You smiled up at your giant, your head leaning against his chest as he wrapped his arms around you. He pressed a kiss to your forehead as he looked back to Demetri, who was simply grinning at the two of you.
He looked to you, his grin softening into a smile. You shot him a small one in return, bringing your hot chocolate to your lips. Demetri snickered as he looked above the pair. "My friend, do you remember me telling you about those human traditions?"
Felix looked up, eyes widening at the decoration hanging above them. He looked down at you with a smirk. You shook your head, chuckling at his reaction, "sorry to break it to you, but that's holly, not a mistletoe."
His eyebrows rose at your answer, his smirk never fading from his face. "And who says I need a plant to tell me when and when I can't kiss my mate?"
"Well, what if I said I didn't want to?" His smirk softened as he leaned down once more, kissing your forehead. "Then I wouldn't. Whenever you're ready, little one." Your cheeks reddened at his words, your eyes dazed as you looked up at him again.
"And if I said I wanted a kiss?" You whispered, watching him carefully. A cough sounded from beside you, "I'm going to leave you two be," Demetri muttered, exiting the room, the rest of his coven trailing from behind, shooting Felix glares and smiles alike. Felix only smiled, resting his forehead against your own. "Whatever my lady wants, is what my lady gets."
He cupped your cheek with his cold hand, guiding your face up to his. His lips softly grazed your own, smiling as he did so. He didn't want to move much, scared his own excitement would end up hurting you. But you took in his silent cue, leaning into the kiss, pressing yourself closer to him. His cold lips hards against your own warm ones sent shivers rushing through your body, goosebumps coating your flesh.
Felix drew back carefully, smirking at your reaction. He placed another kiss on your lips then forehead, pulling you closer to him. That's how the two of you stayed for the majority of the night and the early hours of Christmas morning; Felix's chin resting solemnly upon your head as he held you.
