Chapter 16: Ensuing Bloodbath

Akame POV

There was no doubt that the Jaegers would take the bait, and if somehow they didn't I know (Y/N)'s team would show up even without orders to kill us. What he said the last time we met hasn't left my mind, I don't know how much pain he's in but apparently it's all from me and Murasame's curse. I have to wonder how bloodthirsty he'll be if we do fight and what might happen if Kurome gets harmed...

Mine: "You okay, Akame? You're even quieter than usual. Is something on your mind?" Mine was here with me, being the only other living member of Night Raid other than Najenda whose face is recognized by the Empire but it seems her mood changed quickly from complaining about not being able to play in the water with the others.

Akame: "Oh? ...It's nothing." I couldn't help but to squeeze my arm, there are three main targets on this mission. Kurome, Bols, and (Y/N)... of course those two had to be priority targets on this mission.

Mine: "You're thinking about your little sister and your best friend, right?" Best friend... right. That's all I've ever said about him after I thought I killed him then when he showed up alive again. I doubt he sees anything in me anymore, those eyes from our last encounter, they've been burned into my nightmares.

Akame: "...Yeah." I'm certain I couldn't stop myself from looking saddened as the wind started to pick up from behind me. "They're both coming after me as their target, and I'm doing the same towards them, so I can't help all these thoughts running through my mind." Mine takes a seat next to me, a reassuring smile on her face all the while.

Mine: "Even if they die, you can't say you'll be left all alone. You'd be wrong, you still have us. Be grateful for that." The way she's acting right now only reminds me of one thing from the past. Right after my first mission... killing someone I cared about so much back then. And he was right there, doing the exact same thing for me.

(Y/N): "If it's any consolation, I'll stay with you until you feel better." Is he able to still smile like that? Will I ever be able to even see something like that ever again... I can only hope.

Akame: "...Yeah..."

Kurome POV

It took an entire day to get to a town near Romary Highway, all of the Jaegers and Wolves mobilizing immediately for this mission with more information from our scouts being sent when we arrived. No doubt they knew we found them already, they wouldn't be moving this slow without purpose.

Esdeath: "Najenda's continuing east while Akame's going south. They were seen leaving in two groups upon leaving town."

Bols: "If you keep going east, you reach Kyoroku, where the Way of Peace is based."

(Y/N): "While if you go south, you reach cities backing the Rebel army. Both ways aren't ideal places for us to chase them to."

Wave: "If we hurry, we can catch them in no time. Let's go!"

Esdeath: "No, we need to wait. Night Raid's members are traitors from the capital and their wanted posters have not been widely circulated yet, so we've only been able to track them because they let themselves be seen. And now they've been witnessed splitting into two teams. Don't you find that a bit too convenient?"

Run: "Yes, there's a high probability that this is a trap."

Bols: "You mean, they intentionally drew attention to themselves?"

Seryu: "Do you think they're trying to lure us out of the capital to crush us?"

Esdeath: "Najenda would pull that kind of move. She fights a cool fight with a burning heart."

Poney: "Is it too dangerous for us to go after them then?"

Esdeath: "Not quite. We can't let this opportunity slip by. Night Raid's been very elusive, but now they've completely exposed themselves. We'll just go in prepared for a trap and strike them down, trap and all! Seryu, Run, and I will go after Najenda. Kurome, Wave, Bols and (Y/N) will pursue Akame." I couldn't help but smile after hearing those orders, but (Y/N) stands facing our other team and points towards Captain.

(Y/N): "You four, you're with the Captain. We have Yatsufusa's puppets to boost our numbers, and we already have more members of the Jaeger's here." They all nod together, no rebuttals as we all got ready to move out.

Esdeath: "Keep your wits about you at all times, and if you feel too many of the enemy are about to ambush you, I don't care if you have to retreat. We're on the offensive, but let's not make this a suicide mission. They're the last rats plaguing the capital. Chase them down and then shoot them dead!"

Everyone: "Understood!"

(Y/N) POV

It's been at least a few hours since we've been split apart, my eyes looking everywhere for any signs of an ambush to find nothing. There's no use turning back now in case the other group is dealing with all of Night Raid, we wouldn't be able to reach them fast enough on horseback with how far we are now.

Bols: "So we'll be taking on the capital's strongest enemy, Night Raid... I wonder if I really stand a chance."

Wave: "You'll be fine. When I took on one of Night Raid's members, he didn't fight back. But I could sense he was right on par with me in terms of ability. If we work together, I'm sure we can beat them! And your Teigu is suited for taking on big numbers, it's reassuring to have you here."

Bols: "I hope so."

Kurome: "You talk big, but you'll probably drag the rest of our team down, Wave."

Wave: "What?! Don't you have any faith in my ability?!"

Kurome: "When things come to a head, you always strike me as weak."

Wave: "Just wait until I equip Grand Chariot!"

(Y/N): "Enough fighting, there's something ahead." We quickly got off of our horses, but we only saw a scarecrow. What in the world...

Bols: "I hope it's not a trap."

(Y/N): "Don't leave yourself too open, this could be a fake-out for a different trap." As if it was on queue, a sniper shot aimed for Kurome could be heard in the air as she dodged back, moments later the scarecrow bursts open to have something else charge at me instead.

Wave: "(Y/N), look out!" I was ready to block against it regardless, but Wave jumped in front of me and got launched into the air towards the horizon.

(Y/N): "Wave!"

Najenda: "So we weren't able to take her out with our sniper, but our teamwork paid off even if the one we blew away wasn't a target." All of Night Raid appeared before us, making the move to the east a bluff to lure out Esdeath. Of course she wouldn't take a chance to face Najenda again... like I wouldn't stop at anything to fight Akame. "Kurome, Bols and (Y/N). You are our targets from among the Jaegers. Say your prayers."

Bols: "...I've burned so many victims I've lost count so it's no surprise I'm being targeted by assassins but I will not die!" Akame was right next to Najenda, staring down both me and Kurome as we both smiled towards her.

Kurome: "Sister."

Akame: "Kurome..."

Kurome: "I've missed you so much, this is wonderful."

(Y/N): "So, you were really going to let your friend kill Kurome like that 'partner?'"

Akame: "(Y/N), both of you are still my targets. It doesn't matter."

(Y/N): "Oh, it does matter. Because you can finally pay the price of your betrayal, Leader."

Kurome: "And if I kill you myself, I can add you to Yatsufusa's collection." Black lightning engulfed the area around us, an earthquake rumbling around us as I knew what was going to appear as its hand took both me and Kurome into the air. "Unlike the old me I can make any and all corpses of my puppets, sister. Even if it's a super class Danger Beast like a Death Tagool." The numbers turned around so that we were the ones that outnumbered them, all of the other puppets surrounding the area with Natala appearing right besides us.

(Y/N): "I wonder... how many of you will live through this bloodbath? I can't wait."
