By mid-morning, I felt the after effects of what I got myself into last night. I yawned and yawned until my eyes started to tear up, snacking on the vegetable sticks and nuts Kaname insisted I bring with me didn’t help. Since I was also advised to limit my tea intake this time and opt for the less caffeinated herbal teas instead, I had no other way of reenergizing myself. Finally, I decided on taking my break early because I didn’t want to resort to using halved matchsticks to keep my lids open. I called Kuya Rene to inform him that I was on my way down. As soon as I got out of the elevator, he took my bag and carried it for me, insisting that my hands should just focus on supporting my belly. I didn’t know whether I should laugh or cry, he was acting like an overly worried big brother.

We were about to enter the company’s underground parking area when we were stopped by a woman who was dressed inappropriately for her age and a tall man in his late fifties. Seeing them both brought a frown to my face. I wanted to ignore and pretend that I didn’t see them but they were standing in front of us. With my hands cradling my belly, I looked at my father in apathy.

“Hina, you’re pregnant?” he exclaimed in shock, his eyes darting from my face to my belly and vice versa. “How far along are you? Are you in your last trimester?”

“Yes,” I answered even if it was pretty obvious. “I’m currently still in my fifth month so no, I’m not giving birth anytime soon.”

“But you’re huge!” my estranged father exclaimed without any thought, when he realized this he added apologetically, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so rude…”

I shrugged. “It’s expected; we don’t know much about each other after all.”

His facial expression turned from remorseful to embarrassed to sour. He was about to say something when his mistress interrupted him.
“How dare you talk to your father that way!” Maggie the frog, erm… His mistress shrieked like the shrew she was.

I pretended to massage my ears and with a fake grimace, I told her, “Keep your voice down, this is a building housing several corporate offices, have some manners.”

“I wouldn’t be this livid of you showed your father some respect!”

My eyes narrowed at the sight of her finger pointing at me as though I owed her the world. “You always talk about how I talk to my father and how I’m being disrespectful towards him, have you forgotten why I’m like this?”

“Of course I haven’t! It’s all because of how your mother raised you!” she sneered and attempted to poke me on the forehead with her finger. “You’re as—”

She screamed and wasn’t able to finish her sentence because Kuya Rene caught her finger and bended it backwards. I was sure that if he added a bit more pressure, he’d break her offending digit.

“Maggie!” my father cried out, he then yelled at the man carrying my purse, “What are you doing, let go of her!”

Kuya Rene looked at me questioningly, I nodded my head. In acknowledgment, he let go of Maggie unceremoniously causing her to almost lose her footing.

“Next time you point a finger at me, I’ll push you to the nearest mirror I could find to remind you of what you actually are!” I watched in unconcealed disgust as Mr. Yang comforted his woman. Not wanting to see them a second longer, I began to walk away.

“Hinata, if you still consider me as your father stop right there!”

When I didn’t budge and just continued walking, Mr. Yang ran after me.

“Hinata, stop!”

I quickened my pace, my low heeled mules clacked as I walked.

“I came here to talk to you about something very important!” he told me as soon as he caught up to me. While walking alongside me, he added, “It’s about your sister…”
