I Remembered I Was Pregnant Too

As promised, Kaname waited for me for the rest of the day at the lobby. As I was about to turn off my work laptop, Anne told me that Joan wanted to talk to me. After sending my husband a quick text message informing him that I’ll be a bit late, I told Anne that she may go home now and that I’ll be seeing Joan privately.

“Hi,” Joan greeted me with a hesitant look on her face. “Sorry for disturbing you. I know you’re about to leave and your husband is waiting for you downstairs. I hope you don’t mind the hold up.”

“It’s alright, have a seat,” I told her as I gestured at a nearby chair. “How may I help you?”

Joan remained standing, the hesitant look on her face grew deeper. As I watched her wring her fingers, I realized that we have the same habit whenever we’re worried about something or feeling restless. She squared her shoulders and finally met my eyes.

“I’m not sure if you’ve heard but Rachelle was rushed to the hospital earlier,” she started to say. “It’s finally time for her to give birth but she’s having… Labor difficulties.”

I looked at her and tried to decipher what she was trying to say but failed. “I’m sorry but I can’t think of any other way to word what I’m about to say… Joan, why are you telling me this?”

She bit her lip and looked down but I still managed to catch a glimpse of the internal struggle she was going through.

“What does Rachelle’s current state have to do with me?” I asked, my tone gentle.

“I need your help, Hinata,” she said imploringly, finally letting go of her reluctance. “Tyler won’t visit her in the hospital.”

I waited for her to say more although I was already slightly dreading to hear the rest.

“A-and as a result, Rachelle is emotionally stressed… This… This has caused her labor to stall or slow down...”

“What do you want me to do?” I was now definitely having a bad feeling about this…

“Could… Could you help me convince Tyler to see her? That’s all Rachelle wants, to have him beside her as their daughter is being delivered.”

I closed my eyes as I massaged my forehead.

“Please, Hinata… I know Rachelle has hurt you a lot in the past and I can see that you’re very happy now, but I can’t think of any other way to help her. Although many people see her as haughty and arrogant, Rachelle is actually a good friend to me. She has done so much for me I’ve already lost count.”

The sincerity in her eyes stopped me from the words I was about to say. I wanted to say no because, frankly, this issue was totally none of my business… But the good friend in Joan was making me feel awful for thinking of rejecting her. After all, in this day and age, it’s not easy to keep fiercely loyal people by one’s side.

I sighed. Why am I so soft? I looked away only to see the prescription my doctor gave me. The printed Rod of Asclepius[1] beside her name and title was peeping through the pocket of my bag. Subconsciously, my hand went to my belly. I remembered I was pregnant, too. If I was in Rachelle’s shoes, I would also want to have Kaname beside me as I deliver our little one.

“Do you have Tyler’s number?” I asked Joan. “Give him a call and I’ll try to convince him to see Rachelle.”

She gave me a grateful smile before dialing my ex's phone number and putting it on speaker. When the call connected, the sound of rap music almost drowned out Tyler’s cold hello.

“I already told you, Joan, I’m not going to see her. Yes, the sperm is mine but I don’t want to have anything to do with that… That thing your best friend is carrying,” he said with heavy disgust.
