It's Settled

A few days later, Charles personally came to endorse the two men he carefully handpicked for us. It was the weekend so we had the entire day off. The first one he introduced was a man in his early thirties named Theo. Although he won’t be acting as a bodyguard, he will be assisting us in figuring out what exactly was happening to us.

Theo was fair, slim, was confidently rocking a bowl cut, and had one onyx stud in the shape of a four-leaf clover on his left ear which completed his K-pop idol sense of style. I had to admit, I was a bit dubious about him but the moment he introduced himself and revealed his background in criminal psychology, I immediately understood why Charles seemed to regard him highly.

“I’m Theo James Go and I’m thirty-two. Professionally, I’m a psychologist whose field of expertise is profiling. I just returned to the country after working with the Singaporean police force for several years,” he said while offering his right hand to Kaname for a shake.

I saw excitement sparkle in Kaname's eyes before he took his hand. “So you’re like Dr. George Huang in Law and Order?”

“Not really,” Theo said, his lips curled in a wry yet amused smile. “He plays the role of a Forensics Psychologist in that series and that’s different from what I do. Don’t get fooled by that show, the way it portrays his profession is quite different from what people in the field actually do.”

“I see,” Kaname nodded seriously, disappointment evident in his frowning lips.

Anata, you too much TV, I half sighed, half chuckled internally.

“Anyway, what made you want to help us?” he asked after a short while.

“When Charles mentioned what you and your wife are currently going through, I was very intrigued. You see, humans who are perceptive and very aware of their surroundings are quite few. You made the right decision to not continue shrugging off that intense feeling of being watched as nothing. I have worked on several stalking cases and what I’ve learned is that in some instances, the stalking starts with the victims feeling as though they’re being monitored or watched. They usually shrug it off, just like you did, and think that they’re just being paranoid… But then the situation worsens and turns into bumping into the stalker at random times and places until it becomes more frequent, apparent, and out of control.”

Kaname glanced at me, his jaw was clenched and his hands were balled into fists. He was very worried and I’m willing to bet, also very angry at himself. Wherever my safety is concerned, he would always hold himself as accountable.

“Thank you for helping us. We’ll be in your care,” he said a bit more calmly.

“No need to thank me. Charles and I go a long way so I’ll always be happy to lend him a hand.”

Kaname nodded. Afterwards, he looked at the other guy expectantly. Charles spoke again and introduced kuya[2] Rene. Kuya Rene was the former bodyguard of a local businessman. He is in his early forties and, unlike his flashy counterpart, he gave off the laidback dad vibe. He wore a simple white polo shirt, a pair of dark jeans, and low-cut black chucks. This simplicity and ordinary family guy front was his best disguise because in reality, he was an excellent marksman and a seventh-degree black belter in judo.

“I had to leave my old job because Mr. Mendoza and his family migrated to Australia. He offered to bring me and my family with them but I chose to stay here. I guess I love this country too much,” he explained when Kaname asked him why he was no longer with his former employer.

I excused myself to help mum prepare some snacks and drinks while they talked about our current situation more. As I waited for the water for the tea to boil, my mind started wandering around. I thought of my dream, which was so vivid it still scares me, and our predicament in the real world. I couldn’t help sighing.
