An easy way to drive someone insane is if the same set of five or six characters are used again and again in every episode of a series. The reason people hate this is that these six characters become spotlight stealers, never giving any of the secondary characters really any time to be established. People want diversity, and using this cliche doesn't do that. If anything, the creator dooms themselves to stale plots and lots of complaints from fans about not using all of the characters to their fullest potential. That is why there has to be some moments where the secondary characters shine. It can vary from temporarily becoming a main character for a certain plot, or being the main focus of an episode. There is also the idea of adding a few new characters every now and then, or replacing the entire cast after a few years. That way, your audience won't get annoyed and your stories will stay fresh.
