Since the origins of modern fiction, almost every science fiction writer depicts the future as dark and scary. There is always a dictatorship of some kind, most of the civilian population has gone hungry, and technology has gone reverted back to the Stone Age. It is one of the biggest cliches in the book, all created due to the negative outlooks most people have on the world. Although great products have come out of this cliche, (The Hunger Games and Anthem are two great examples), this story trope has been overused. If you want to write a book about the future, it might be a good idea to instead create some type of almost perfect utopia, or better a slightly advanced civilization like ours today. Writing about a dark future isn't a horrid idea, but maybe writing about a good future for once might make your work stand out.
