People easily love to target any story that uses any type of popular culture reference. They see the reference as a cliche way to get the audience's attention and think the writers made it out of a cheap way to meet deadlines. That is a huge reason why episodes of a TV show based off a popular movie or book are usually hated upon by a majority of people. Although, I don't share the same point of view on this topic, I do agree the cliche is kind of overused. It would be better if a writer tried to avoid them altogether or only used them once in a while in order to make their plots more original.
