How many times in the end of an epic adventure story has the main character died in the end? If your answer was at least three, congratulations, you just figured out this plot device is a cliche. In my opinion, 90% of the time, whenever the main character of a certain work of fiction dies, it just feels like an easy way out by the writers. The character is just killed for the sake of not making any more sequels, which is a betrayal to fans and has happened too many times for comfort. However, letting the main character live in the end gives your work a better chance of standing out and fully satisfying fans. The Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games series both let their main characters live, and just look at how well received they are.
