As much as a lot of people, including me like the idea of heroes and villains facing off against each other in some type of final battle, it is super cliche. With these kinds of stories, the heroes always have to win, no matter how skilled the villains really are. Therefore, you know from the start that the heroes are going to emerge victorious, and all potential suspense that could have been created is nonexistent. The only was this kind of final battle story could work in any way without being cliche is really to throw the villains a bone. The villains will unfortunately have to win in some form, whether it be the whole battle or huge portions of it. Therefore, the suspense is restored, and the story loses any evidence of being cliche. A kind of controversial example of the villains actually getting the upper hand in a story is in the fan hated season of Total Drama, Total Drama: All Stars. In it, the villainous team, the Villainous Vultures had the upper hand in most challenges and sent most of the heroes home early. Additionally, one of the heroes was being corrupted by his evil personality, thus causing additional chaos to both sides. Although the execution of it wasn't great, as it stands, the story was more original than others.
