This cliche is just extremely insulting, especially to me. For those who don't know, I was born with a mild case of autism, which affects the way you communicate with others due to different parts of the brain being stronger than normal. Even with the communication problems that follow me even now, I am able to think for myself and participate in normal classes. In fact, I even do pretty well in those classes. So why do some people see autism, as well as other mental disorders as a ticket to make a dumb character? I find it extremely rude, and I think it needs to end. The right way to write about someone with a mental disorder is to give respect to the character, show what the mental disorder is all about, and show that despite the day to day struggles, they make things work out for themselves. Just look at Mike's character from Total Drama, who has multiple personality disorder, and has gone so far as to win All-Stars.
