Despite the statistics that a third of the population is attractive, there still seems to be an overwhelming amount of beautiful looking people in literature. These characters are flawless by description of the author, and are more beautiful than anyone you have ever seen in real life. Characters with imperfections are a rarity, thus making the author look vain. I find it insulting that so many authors use the cliche of making every character beautiful, instead of having a blend of kind hearted people that have some imperfections and some beautiful characters. Beauty exists on the inside of a person, by their personality and the good deeds that they do. That is why when I find something with characters that are still loved despite a physical deformity to be better than the work that focuses on characters that should be adored for being attractive. The former piece boosts self confidence and is way more original in a literary sense.
