The Puppet Assassin - Ch 37 [hard times]

“I do. I don’t know what to do,” I whispered. Was I supposed to love this much? It was overwhelming. How could I even believe that I wouldn’t be able to function without him?!

“You’re not supposed to do anything…” Garth chuckled.

I felt a tear trickle down my cheek and knocked it away angrily.

Garth raised his hands and tentatively put them around me, sliding them around my arms and wrapping his hands around my waist. My hands hung awkwardly at my sides. “Ah, I’m sorry, Dizelde. I wasn’t serious. This is hard, I didn’t mean to mock you.” He kissed my cheek and then sighed. “I’ve never, truly, been in love but I’ve been around enough people who are and I’ve enough seer’s blood in me to feel what they felt. It’s big, people don’t see how big it is until it hits them. Every other emotion is selfish, it’s based on what you feel. Love involves two people and you can’t control it. It’s scary because you don’t know if your love is whole, if the recipient of your feelings returns the same sentiment.”

Garth swayed a little, taking me with him, and I nearly smiled. Who would’ve thought that I’d feel so comfortable in his arms?

“It makes you nervous because you lose what control you had over your life because it’s not your life anymore, it’s his too. And his life is partly yours now as well. You can’t think simply for yourself anymore, because he’s there and whatever you do affects him. It makes you so happy that you worry that you’ll forget everything, and everybody else.”

He moved his hands back to my sides and then dropped them to my hands, wrapping his fingers around my palms. He pulled back, still close but far enough away to look into my eyes. He was smiling. “As corny as it sounds though, Dizelde, your love for him and his for you makes you complete. And that means that you don’t have to worry about what will come next or what you have to do. I’m not saying that life will be perfect and you and Lark will never have a single problem but the fact that love is there means that no matter how many times you fall, he’ll be there to pick up, even if he was the one who tripped you in the first place.”

“And vice versa,” I said softly.

“Yes.” His smile turned into a grin. “I have a feeling you’ll be tripping him up a lot.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What’s that supposed to mean,” I grumbled.

He released my hands and chucked my chin with a gentle fist. “I’m glad, for you and Larkin.”

“I love you too, Garth.” Oh God, I was just blurting everything out today, wasn’t I? I was just getting caught up in the moment and my emotions were running high…

“I know, I’m just irresistible.”

I sneaked a look up and him and saw that he was looking away, a small smirk on his face. Jerk. “Just kidding,” I muttered. “I just didn’t want you to feel left out.”

“Marry me instead?” He grinned at me as he asked.

“Yeah, good luck talking Larkin through that one… Uh, I didn’t say anything about getting married.”

Garth poked me in the shoulder and continued towards the house. “Way to cover that up, Dizzy.”

“Dizzy, really? And you just caught me by surprise, that’s all!” I argued as I trotted after him.

“Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to marry him,” he sang, laughing as he walked faster. “You want to go down the aisle.”

I huffed as I kept up with his pace. “I don’t!”
