In 1992, approximately 70 km from New York lies Mastic Beach, a small town nestled along the southern coast of Long Island. The community primarily consists of modest households, and while it isn't labeled as dangerous, the atmosphere there isn't particularly reassuring.
Nevertheless, it is in Mastic Beach where young 9-year-old girl Katie Beers lives.
Despite her young age, Katie has already endured an overwhelming number of misfortunes. For starters, she has never known her father, which is not surprising as Katie was conceived during a one-night stand between him and her mother, Marilyn.
Her mother already has another child, a boy named John, who is Katie's older brother.
