Joseph and Mary Jane had separated on October 30 due to Joseph's disapproval of her job in prostitution and the people she associated with. However, they did encounter each other again.

On the night of November 8th, Joseph visited Mary Jane. Upon arrival, he found her in the company of a woman who was about to leave. Different accounts exist regarding the identity of this lady, the timing of Joseph's arrival, and the duration of his stay. According to Joseph's version of events, he arrived between 7 and 7:45 pm and took off before 9 pm.
