Facing the mirror, and smiling as wide as humanly possible, I smoothed the fabric of my dress against my legs. It was the Macy's dress I'd bought forever ago, on my mall trip with Laurie. The red belt held the dress cinched at my waist, and showed off my curves.

It was homecoming. I'd been doing good in school, Laurie'd made the basketball team; things were perfect. Me and Laurie were- ever since the moment by the swings -an item. Alex teased that she knew we'd date eventually. I swear, I wanted to punch her when she said that. Robbie said he'd be there if we ever broke up. Brandy, pathetic slut-bag that she is, came begging at Laurie's feet. He shooed her like you might a pigeon. I'm not gonna lie, I sorta loved her misery.

"Ri? You ready?" I heard Laurie yell from downstairs. I spun, the fabric of the dress whirling out prettily. Adjusting the hem and neckline one last time, I darted out of the room and downstairs to my waiting love.

For whatever it's worth, I knew we wouldn't last forever. I wasn't so unreasonable that I expected to marry my high school sweetheart. But for the time being, I had exactly what I wanted.
