Buongiorno, caro studente/cara studentessa!

The new word of the day is 'caro', meaning 'dear'.

Want to write a letter to your friend? Start with 'Caro...' Want to refer to someone in an affectionate way? Use 'Caro/a' depending on whether that person is male or female. It can even be used between male friends to say hello/goodbye (Ciao caro!) and it wouldn't be thought of as strange! Just don't use it to teachers or people who are older than you, even though I've heard people use 'cara' towards elderly women.

N.B (Nota bene-note well)-When writing professional letters to people who are higher in status than you (teachers, police officers, office workers etc.) or whom you do not know, use 'Gentile' and not 'Caro'.

Andrea and Matteo sono due amici di scuola. Al weekend si incontrano nel parco e cominciano a parlare. (from school, they meet up & they start talking)

Andrea: Ciao, Matteo!

Matteo: Wella! Tutto bene?

Andrea: Sì, grazie. Tu?

Matteo: Sto bene, grazie. Cosa fai qui?

Andrea: Aspetto il mio fratellino. Esce da scuola fra poco.

Matteo: Ah, ho capito.

Andrea: Tu invece?

Matteo: Niente di ché! Sto solo portando a spasso il mio cane.

Andrea: Che bello che è! Come si chiama?

Matteo: Si chiama Cody.

Andrea: Cody? Interessante...

Matteo: Eh sì. Sai che sono andato nel supermercato prima, ma c'era davvero tanta gente!

Andrea: Davvero?

Matteo: Sì, proprio così.

Andrea: Chi sa perché. Di solito non è così pieno.

Matteo: Vabbé. Ora vado, buona giornata!
