The Puppet Assassin - Ch 30 [death's harvester]

Start from the beginning

“Larkin?” My voice came out soft, dazed.

“Yeah?”

“Garth said, this morning, that James didn’t get rid of emotion, he took it into himself.”

“Uh-huh.” He turned my hand around and nibbled on the bottom of my palm. I was surprised at the intensity of pleasure the touch caused.

I struggled to speak. “So, where does the wounds and stuff that you heal go?”

He drew back, his expression suddenly hard. He sat on the bed next to stomach and played with my hand on his lap. “I’m not as nice as that kid,” he said calmly, running his thumb and forefinger up and down each of my fingers. It made electricity run up the nerves in my arm.

His eyes connected with mine and he frowned. “That boy, the one that had the knife. He’s feeling a lot more pain now.”

My eyes widened. “You can do that?” I whispered.

He shrugged and nodded. “Yeah.” He returned his attention back to my hand.

My heart jolted and beat faster. That was insane. He could inflict pain without having the person in the room. He was very, very dangerous.

“But it’s not always like that, it’s just easier that way, sucks less energy out of me. Another way for us to heal is to speed up the healing process in your arm, joining cells and muscle. It’s not like taking the wound from you and putting it in someone else, I’m just speeding up what time would do naturally.”

“So, if someone had a fatal wound…” I stared at him but he didn’t turn to look at me, tracing his fingers over the creases on my palm.

“I can’t save a life without taking one.” He sounded bitter.

He shifted his position on the bed. Putting a hand on either side of me and leaning forward so that our eyes were level.

“But that’s not the most pleasant topic. Especially when you’re lying here in my bed.” His eyes twinkled wickedly while I felt like I just stepped off a cliff into free fall. Weightless.

His head lowered and his lips found mine. They were gentle and yet drawing me in. He sucked my upper lip into his mouth and released it before brushing softly over to my cheek and then returning. My skin was tingling and warm. He made everything feel ethereal, I melted whenever he kissed me.

He slipped his tongue into my mouth and this time I tasted the sharpness of him, the tangy taste, like a meringue but not as sweet. It shot into my bloodstream and emptied my mind of everything but the two words; want and Larkin. My hands came up, one gripping his shoulder and the other snaking around his neck. I wanted to trap him here. A soft sound escaped from my mouth when his lips separated from mine by a little less than a centimetre. His eyes were open and they stared into mine.

The door swung open.

“Get up, come on now! Liam’s here and you need to wake up the hostages.” Garth grinned evilly. “There’s always time to continue this later!”

Larkin’s head moved down a fraction and brushed so softly against mine it tickled. Then he turned his head and glared at Garth.

“Really?”

Garth leaned forward. “I can always get Liam come up here and see that you’re doing exactly what he said you shouldn’t be doing,” he said quietly, the grin still in place.

Larkin pushed himself up and walked towards the door. He turned back to me and mouthed ‘later’, obviously concerned about Liam’s witch hearing. I blushed and he left.

Garth raised his eyebrows at me and smirked. He whispered to me again. “Just in case I forget to tell you later, I always have a packet of condoms in my drawer next to my bed, if Larkin runs out…” He chuckled and left the room.

I buried my head into the pillow and felt like screaming. My nerves, excitement and embarrassment mixing together so that I felt like I was sparking with electricity. Hurry, hurry, hurry, I thought to Larkin.

[I would just like to comment here that this story has surpassed The Thief’s Revenge by about thirty Word pages and it’s only up to chapter thirty. Uhh yeahh! Sorry to those who feel like I’ve drawn this out ;) ]
