Jackson and I grew up together and we used to be friends. I knew Derek had bitten him. The weird thing was that I couldn’t smell the beta in him. As for Isaac, he just kept staring at me. Isaac and I weren’t what you would call best friends but we did talk to each other a bit after school. I even gave him a couple of rides in the morning, save him from riding his bike all the way and then of course I dropped him home after school. Jackson on the other hand, I used to be a really close with, but after my dad left we didn’t talk except in maths when he helped me out with some equations, he was actually a lot smarter than he looks, not saying he’s a genius though, mathematics just wasn’t my thing.

The lesson wasn’t that bad, but I couldn’t help but glance over at Jackson every now and again. Derek had bitten him, before me, but he hadn’t turned yet. It didn’t make any sense. So I decided to text Derek.

I’m in maths and sitting next to Jackson, but he doesn’t smell like a beta and I’m pretty sure he has no idea that I’m one… -Anna.

“Texting your boyfriend?” Stiles whispered leaning over to my desk with a cheeky grin plastered on his face. I decided to role with it.

“None of your business.” I replied with the same grin.

“Mr Stilinski, do I have to send you to the principal’s office for interrupting the class again?”

“No, Sorry.” Stiles sat back up, but not before giving me a wink. I couldn’t help but smile at that.

Oh for the love of god women, the bite was meant to help you with your crush. I scalded myself.

Finally the bell rang and I bolted out of the class room, speed walking to my English room. Thankfully the only person in the room was my teacher. I handed her the note and then left school. Isaac hadn’t come up to me again, but I had a feeling he would. It is hard to explain, but I could just tell he wanted it, the bite. It was like Derek said, we could sense it.

I got in my car and drove to the station.

“Derek?”

“I thought you’d be at school.”

”I was, I talked to Isaac. He didn’t confirm anything, but I could sense he wants to say yes.”

“You’re learning fast. Why don’t we try fighting?”

“Yeah, last time we tried that you slammed me into a wall and I had a saw back for hours.”

Before I could comprehend what was happening Derek was charging towards me. His hand reached and grabbed my shoulder. I tried to fight back, but it was useless. I was pinned to the ground in seconds.

“I’m going to teach you how to fight back.” Derek was practically lying on top of me and his mouth was right next to my ear. “Because you’re a beta your reflexes are faster and you should have a natural ability to fight, you just have to learn to use it.”

Derek stood up and extended his hand towards me to help me get up. Instead I grabbed his arm and yanked him to the ground. The fact that he even fell showed me that I had caught him off guard. We rolled around until I was lying on top of him, but I was only there for a few seconds before Derek managed to kick me off and jump up. I did the same and we were now facing each other like in some western standoff. I realised he wasn’t going to make the first move so I charged. I thought the most predictable thing to do would be going for his neck or stomach so instead once I reached him I dropped to the ground, stuck my leg out and spun around. I knocked his feet out from underneath him and Derek, the big bad alpha, crumbled to the ground.

“Not bad.” He said getting his feet back on the ground, and brushing off the dust from his black leather jacket.

“Thank-you.” I said with a smug smile.

“Where did you get that move from?”

“Movies.” I said with a big grin. “Jackie Chan to be more specific.” His reply was a chuckle, something that didn’t happen very often. “Can I ask you something?” I said, turning more serious.

“Sure.” Derek said, sitting down on the edge of the old train’s doorway.

“What will happen if I lose control?”

“You mean on the full moon?”

“No, in general. Stiles told me that Scott lost control all the time and that the only thing that could bring him back was Alison and that she’s his anchor?”

“If I’m with you I can bring you back.”

“And if I’m alone or at school?”

“I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be tough, but once you learn control everything gets better. And usually you will only find out what your anchor is under a full moon – when the need for one is the strongest, but in the meantime think of possible anchors and when the moon comes on Friday night think about them and see if any of them are strong enough.”

“What’s yours?”

“Anger.”

“Just anger? There has to be more to it… a reason.”

Derek looked at the ground for a few moments then back at me. He was looking me in my eyes until he finally said. “My family. It’s anger towards what happened to them.”

“I’m sorry. It must have been hard.”

His eyes flickered to the floor again then he stood up. “Come on.”

“What’re we doing?”

“I’m gunna to teach you control.”
