With the sound of many war horns blowing, every man and woman from every corner of the Seven Kingdoms jogged around the walls of Winterfell while many more flooded the field outside the castle—hauling scorpions onto the battlements and adjusting the range of trebuchets for maximum capacity. As the sun started slowly setting in the distance, the Free Folk, Unsullied and Dothraki alike were moving their forces into the best position possible. Helping the smiths unload supplies from carriages was Gendry, who handed out each freshly forged dragonglass weapons—axes, swords, spears and arrow tips—were being passed around to each soldier and militiamen in the largest army the world had ever seen.

Atop the battlements, Grey Worm orders the Unsullied to begin testing the trebuchet's range capabilities. One Unsullied pulls a rope, causing a large boulder to be thrown into the air as more soldiers march out of the gates of Winterfell in large numbers; archers, meanwhile, ready their bows and arrows on the edges of the battlements itself. Hearing horses neighing in the distance, the Dothraki and Vale cavalry ride along past the trench of spikes below the drawbridge and move along to prepare for the heavy charge along the west and east flanks. Once the first set of traps is triggered, that will be combined Dothraki-Vale heavy cavalry will assail the Army of the Dead and withdraw to safety.

Winterfell — Library...

Within hours of being informed of the fall of the Last Hearth, Jon Snow and Robb Stark gathered everyone in the library with Daveth Baratheon and Daenerys Targaryen stood with their respective advisors and generals—each of them discussing the proposed battle plan. As the candles in the room offered enough illumination, the map of Winterfell was laid out with various dozens of army pieces scattered along the large table, representing both the living and the White Walkers. To either side of the Unsullied are markers showing the North, Vale, Riverland, Stormland, Westerland, Reach and Dornish armies and in the front are the Dothraki and Unsullied.

Standing counterclockwise with the Dragon Queen were Ser Jorah, Jaehaegon, Qhono, Grey Worm and Missandei; those who stood with the Young Stag were Ser Barristan, Ser Jaime, Brienne and Ser Olyvar. Others included Samwell, Alys Karstark, Tormund, Yohn Royce, the Mormont sisters Dacey, Alysane and Lyanna along with their elderly mother Maege, Arya, Ser Davos, Ser Brynden the Blackfish, Tormund, Theon, Oberyn, the Sand Snakes Obara, Nymeria and Tyene Sand, Gendry, Mya Stone, Beric, Thoros of Myr. Jon, however, stood between Daveth and Daenerys as Bran is seated behind them all in front of the fireplace.

"They're coming," Jon told the assembly. "We have dragonglass and Valyrian steel. But even though there are too many of them, far too many, the world's largest army in history is already on our side—fighting for the living. Our enemy doesn't tire, doesn't stop, doesn't feel. The Night King has the power of necromancy, cryomancy and can create both seismic fissures and severe blizzards. If it comes down to a war of attrition, he can wear our forces down as his own cannot. If it does happen, he can raise our own dead and add them to his army to bolster his numbers and turn the tide in his favor. We cannot let that happen."
