Process Oriented Maintenance

Maintenance Steering Group 3

Six Industry Working Groups;

-Structures

-Mechanical Systems

-Engine and Auxiliary Power Plant

-Electrical and Avionics System

-Flight Controls and Hydraulics

-Zonal; findings used to determine maintenance process for item called a 'bottom-up' approach - looked at components as the most likely cause of equipment malfunction

Maintenance Steering Group 2;

-MSG approach extremely successful

-747 references removed - could be used on all aircraft

-Renamed MSG2 used to develop scheduled maintenance/inspection program for 1970s aircraft

-MSG2 slightly different for 3 maintenance areas

-structures

-engines

-led to process oriented maintenance approach

Hard Time Process-

-requires item/component to be removed

-item is completely overhauled, partially overhauled or discarded before exceeding a specified interval

-interval can be calendar time, operating cycles, or flight hours

-ideal if component always fails at 'x' hours

-applied to components that have a direct adverse effect on safety of flight

-applied to components that have no possible maintenance check for reliability

On Condition Process-

-requires item to be periodically tested or inspected against a physical standard

-if component fails it must be overhauled or replaced

-must be restricted to components, equipment, or systems that can be tested or inspected without doing a tear-down inspection

-the OC checks are periodically scheduled

Examples; break wear indicator pins/control cables

Condition Monitor Requirements-

-item has no direct, adverse impact to safety of flight

-item must not have any 'hidden function'

-item must be included in the operators CM or reliability program

-items typically have no adverse relationship between age and reliability (lights/instruments)

Maintenance Steering Group 3-

-Airframe Systems Tasks

Lubrication

Servicing

Inspection

Functional Check

Operational Check

Visual Check

Restoration

Discard

Structural Item Tasks-

-Aircraft are subject to 3 sources or structural deterioration

Environmental deterioration - result of chemical interaction with environment (may be time dependant)

Accidental damage - caused by contact or impact

Fatigue damage - due to cyclic loading

-3 structural inspection techniques

General visual inspection - finds the obvious

Detailed inspection - used inspection aides like mirrors/lights

Special detailed inspection - NDI

Zonal-

-packages inspections into aircraft zones

-all systems, components, and installations within a zone receive surveillance to determine Security of installation and general condition
