"Can someone explain what happened just now"
I stayed in the kitchen for a good few minutes, standing still as a pole not getting a grip on what happened to me just now. Did he just allow me to work in the kitchen from tomorrow onwards? Am I dreaming? Wasn't he the one who was eager to fire me a few hours ago because I failed to order fish on time?
"Ouch," a cry left my mouth as I pinched myself hard on my arm, still not believing his words. The pinching pain I felt made me widen my eyes in surprise as I finally got on hold of what he said to me or put in better words commanded me.
"Oh my God, I can't believe it. Me Sage King will be working in the kitchen from tomorrow onwards" I squealed happily as I jumped on my place still not believing just what happened to me now. It was such a big thing for me and I was trying to grasp it fully in a few seconds. I never expect him to allow me to work in his kitchen looking at his rude behaviour towards me. He always blamed me if it's not even mistaken but today I entered his kitchen without his permission and he was not mad at me. But what changed. Is he not mad at me anymore?
I still can't believe my luck.
"Sage King, stop thinking about if and buts and focus on positive ones. From now onwards you will work in the kitchen with everyone. How exciting it's that" I whispered yelled to myself as I danced more on my place in pure happiness.
"Guys come fast I think the head chef fired Sage and he has gone mad" I heard James announcing in his worried voice, making me lift my head and look at him with a huge smile on my face.
"Guys come fast," he said in the same voice as he saw my huge smile with a twitched face.
"We shouldn't have let you in. It is all our fault" William entire the kitchen from behind with the same guilty face followed by Logan.
"But the main dish was hit then why head chef fired him" Logan who was always mad at me was worrying about me getting fired. They all were in their discussion as I ran towards William and hugged him tightly and he wrapped his arms around me.
"I think his situation Is out of control," he said, securing me in his arms with grip as if the moment he let me go I would run like a madwoman and he was right. I might do that because I am on top of the world right now. The dream I saw with my open eyes has come to existence finally.
"Guys, guys," I said in my excited voice to get their attention as I broke my hug but William still was not letting me go out of it. They all looked at me as they heard me stopping their discussion.
"From tomorrow onwards I'm going to work with you guys in the kitchen" I screeched in my excited voice, making them look at me with wide eyes.
"Guys we need to take him soon to the doctor before his condition gets worse," Logan said while looking at me with the same wide eyes not believing a word out of my mouth. I knew they would not believe me. I too didn't believe my ears. It took me a good ten minutes to accept I was not dreaming and it was realigning to me.
"Guys, believe me, the head chef said to report to me in the kitchen at sharp nine o'clock," I mimicked his voice, making their already wide eyes almost fall out of their eye socket. Nothing was hidden from their eyes. They knew head chest hate me to his guts and him allowing me to work in his precious kitchen was like a Blue Moon to them.
"Oh my God I can't believe it," Willam said in his surprised voice as he hugged me.
"You are not pranking us right," he asked in his still surprised voice while breaking our hug and locking in my eyes straight.
"No," I said while laughing seeing his funny facial expression.
"I'm so happy for you," James said, hugging me from the side as Willam was still hugging me. We were having a group hug as we jumped up and down at the good news. After a good five minutes, they let me go. I saw Logan was still sitting beside us with a smile on his face. He placed his hand in front of me to shake it. I could see awareness in his posture.
"Welcome to the kitchen and thank you for not telling my name to the head chef," he said, apologising for the morning because of which we were in trouble.
"Oh don't mention it," I said with a smile on his face as I took his hand and squeezed it with the same amount of pressure.
"Now we are on little good terms but I'm still not going to let Sophia go without a fair fight," he said as he shook my hand then cleared his throat while looking at me as he kept shaking my hand. Him and his Sophia I need to put some sense in her to make her see this guy loves her like a mad man. I nodded my head in understanding and that's when the corner of his lips curled a little bit.
"So guys it's a call for celebrations" James yelled in his excited voice making us all cheer in yes. We decided to have drinks on our way back home like we did last time as tomorrow we have to be at work so we can't party wildly. Those guys were truly happy for me and I could see it. Logan was still trying to be a tough guy but I knew he was happy for me even though we had differences between us.
"You know what now I know why she likes you more" suddenly Logan said in his slurring voice as he looked at me with his third beer in his hand. He opened and closed his eyes as he tried to focus on my face.
"Why," I asked in my curious yet amused voice as I looked at him still nursing my first beer as I didn't want to drink more than one. William looked at me and moved his eyes to Logan with an amused face. Whereas James looked up from his cell phone as he was always messaging his girlfriend.
"You are," he said as he jabbed his finger on my chest making me look at him with a frown as he touched my chest.
"Let's talk while keeping our hands to ourselves," William said he took his hand in his and moved it back to him as he was continually jabbing my chest with a force making me feel the pain a little, and William noticed it. I know he was not doing to hurt me but in the way, man does to another. Nowadays my chest feels so sensitive as I wrap it with a chest band tightly. It has started to give me problems but I have to endure this pain to continue my disguise. He didn't mind William taking his hand away as he was too drunk to notice.
"Y--you," he said again in his drunk voice while looking at me with his half-open eyes, "you are a brave and honest guy," he said in his drunk voice and then slumped on the table in total blackout. His drunken words took away my smile from my face.
Am I Brave?
I'm not sure of it unless bravery is defined in terms of dressing as a man and working where women are not allowed. Honestly, it is far away from me. I have been deceiving everyone from day one. Him, James, chef Oliver, William and him. The guilt that I was deceiving them from day one started to eat me at his drunken confession of my character. I was deceiving people who were like a family to me here. The rest of the time I was lost in my thoughts. I felt someone squeezing my arm and it made me look at the person. William asked me with his raised eyebrow if I was ok and I nodded at him with a faint smile on my face. But inside I was still deep in my thoughts where guilt has wrapped me up in its net. On my way back home on the train, I called Sophia and told her everything that had happened since morning.
"Sage you are not deceiving anyone. You are just not telling them the truth now but you will once the time comes if you want to. It's your choice" she said in her soft voice. Will I be able to gather my courage to tell them the truth one day? Will I be able to face their anger the day they come to know I was a girl all the time? Will, he let me go once he knew I was deciding and working in a kitchen where he did all other women. The grey eyes looking at me with disgust flashed in front of my eyes. I took a deep shaky breath to settle the unsettling opinions inside me. Only the thought of it makes me shiver in a bad way.
"Will I be able to withstand their anger? Will I be able to see their smiles replaced with the loathing they feel towards me" I said in my low voice while swallowing a big lump that had formed in my throat.
"Sage, listen to me. Don't let the guilt eat you up. Think about your family. You are doing this for them. Think about their smiling faces for which you are working so hard against all the odds" she said in her soft voice making me understand her words.
I nodded and realised she couldn't see me so I replied in a small "yes" while handing my heart and mind. If I fall apart now then who will stand by me. I have to do it on my own. I need money to save our restaurant and I will do it at any cost even if I have to gain the hatred of the people who love me and care for me when my family is not here to do it. I swallowed my tears as I knew I would not be able to hold my selfies if I let my tears down.
"Don't worry about anything and stop overthinking. I will meet you tomorrow. We need to celebrate, now you are finally going to work in the kitchen" she said happily from the other side, spreading a small smile on my face. We said our bye and I cut the call. The next day arrived soon after I told the happy news to Erick and he was happy for me too. He lifted me in his arms and twirled me after listening to me and Mint followed our action as he chased his tail in circles making us laugh.
I tried to suppress all my guilt and replayed it with the excitement of my first day working in the kitchen under the head chef. The kitchen was busy most of the time so we didn't get time to relax. I could now feel the pressure everyone felt working here. Every time I laughed with others or if William teased me I would get hard stairs making me close my out. The head chef made me work hard as he made sure I was busy all the time so I could get less time to interact with others.
But I enjoyed working with them. On my first day I worked my ass off but I can't complain because I felt lively. Now I was alone in the kitchen cleaning it as it was my duty from now onwards. Everyone had already left so I switched off the light and went down to leave or else I would miss my train. I was out of the gate when I saw a black Maserati waiting in front of the gate and he was standing in front of it while resting his back on it. What is he still doing here I thought he left? He looked at me as I opened the gate. I was about to walk past him.
"Get in the car I will give you a lift," he said in his firm voice not asking me but commanding me. Why is he so suddenly being so different? It somehow started to scare me. I decided last night that I'm slowly going to start distancing myself from everyone. Especially from him.
"No thank you I will take the subway'' I declined and was about to walk away when he gripped my hand pulling me towards him.
"I'm not asking so get in the car nicely," he said looking straight into my eyes as his grey eyes bored whole in my face. I shivered at his tone. But before I could say anything a big hand grips his which was holding mine.
"What do you think you are doing?" a very familiar voice said in his warning tone, making my eyes almost fall out of my eye socket. I looked at the person with a horror expression on my face and a mere whisper left my mouth.
"Elijah what are you doing here"
