EXT. CAROUSEL – DAY
Torie walks over to an empty carousel. Jaxson sits on the platform holding a teddy bear.
JAXSON
You wanted a grand gesture. (re: carousel) It's all ours. It won't make up for what I did, but I'm hoping it's a start.
He offers her the bear. She takes it.
TORIE
Why'd you do it?
JAXSON
None of that even matters. If we're going to do this, we have to put the past behind us.
TORIE
You went creeping behind my back. I have the right to know why.
JAXSON
It just happened. But I promise you, you're it for me. We have something special. I don't want to lose you.
He goes in for a kiss and Torie lets down her guard until--
TORIE
I can't.
Jaxson backs off. Torie looks at the teddy bear.
TORIE (CONT'D)
The fact that you knew I'd be back...How do I know you won't use that against me.
JAXSON
You know me. I'm not that guy. Trust me.
TORIE
Trust you? All I see when I look at you is the two of you laughing at me for being stupid enough to believe this was real. You broke my trust. And you only get to do that once.
She thrusts the teddy bear into his arms and walks away. She stops when she sees Shae, Mo, and Brandy.
SHAE
I guess you didn't need us after all.
EXT. FESTIVAL/DUNK TANK – NIGHT
Flynn and Clarke walk around the festival and come across the dunk tank. Eric sits above the water roasting passersby.
ERIC
Hey, Flynn? What's with the shades? Shouldn't Clarke be the embarrassed one?
Flynn laughs it off.
FLYNN
Good one.
ERIC
Where'd you find that shirt? My grandpa would love it.
CLARKE
Are you going to let him talk to you like that?
FLYNN
It's all part of his gig. He doesn't mean any of that stuff. Besides, my arms are worn out from those other games. I don't want to overdo it.
ERIC
It's okay, Flynn we get it. You throw like a girl.
This ignites Clarke. She gives the other volunteer her money and takes the ball. She positions herself and throttles it against the target, dunking Eric in the water. The people around them cheer. She picks out her prize. Eric emerges from the water. He offers his fist.
ERIC
Good job.
Clarke fist bumps him. Her and Flynn walk away.
FLYNN
That was impressive. Why aren't you on the team?
CLARKE
Not really my thing.
FLYNN
You probably think I'm useless.
He takes off his glasses.
FLYNN (CONT'D)
These were supposed to make me feel better about myself, but I just have to face the facts. I was born to be a loser.
CLARKE
You are not a loser.
FLYNN
I lost every single game we played today. That is the literal definition of a loser.
CLARKE
You won me. I don't care if you can't hit a target or swing a dumb mallet. That's not why I like you.
FLYNN
You like me?
CLARKE
Why'd you think I asked you out on this date?
FLYNN
This is a date? So...you don't care that I'm just a smart kid.
CLARKE
You're not just a smart kid. You're funny and a sweetheart. And yeah, I kind of love the fact that you geek out over science. It's cute. I was just too afraid to say so because my friends think I come on too strong.
FLYNN
Maybe you shouldn't listen to your friends.
CLARKE
Maybe you're right.
She takes off her class ring and puts it on his finger.
CLARKE (CONT'D)
Now you won't feel like a loser.
As Flynn admires the ring, Abram appears. He calls out to him.
ABRAM
Yo, Flynn Monster! Round up the band.
FLYNN
What's going on?
ABRAM
We've got a show to do.
