SAVANNAH
"Choices." The tree symbolizes life decisions. If you follow the branches, they'll lead back to the trunk. The one choice that started it all.
VANCE
I was not expecting it to be that deep. I just saw a tree. That's probably while you're the artist and I'm the guy trying to get an easy A.
SAVANNAH
You got an A?
VANCE
Burn. I think you hurt his feelings.
Savannah cracks his smile.
VANCE
So that's your sense of humor? Making fun of ugly, little creatures? That's not very nice.
SAVANNAH
You're right. I'm sorry. He has...character.
VANCE
We can't all be exceptional artists. Maybe you could give me some tips. I'm not busy lunch period. Aside from eating the best grilled cheese pretzel in the world.
SAVANNAH
That's disgusting.
VANCE
You have to dip it in the tomato soup to get the full experience?
SAVANNAH
You can't sit with me eating that.
VANCE
That almost sounded like an invite.
Savannah gives him a look. He smiles back.
EXT. CAFETERIA – DAY
In the lunch line, Tristen watches Savannah and Vance who sit alone at a table. Vance dips his pretzel grilled cheese into tomato soup and Savannah cringes. Flynn enters the line behind Tristen, obscuring his view.
FLYNN
Hey, Tristen. How's your day going so far?
TRISTEN
Okay, I guess. What about yourself?
He moves down the line. Grabs a tray.
FLYNN
You know. The usual. I'm kind of freaking out.
TRISTEN
Is Vance still bothering you? I told him to get off your back. I'll talk to him.
FLYNN
No. Vance just acts like I don't exist. And now I know why. Thanks.
TRISTEN
You had my back, now I've got yours.
They go to Tristen's table.
TRISTEN (CONT'D)
What's got you bugging out this time? I can't beat up everyone.
FLYNN
There's this girl.
TRISTEN
Ah. You want to know how to talk to her. Get her to notice you.
FLYNN
She noticed me. She wants to hang out at the Senior Festival.
TRISTEN
So what's the problem?
FLYNN
I don't want to disappoint her. She only sees me as this smart kid who can recite the increased velocity of an object of accelerated gravity per second. I want to be more than that. I want to be...cool. Like you.
Tristen is amused.
TRISTEN
You want to be like me?
FLYNN
It's like you walk into a room and people gravitate toward you like you're Isaac Newton. You're friends with just about everyone. The majority of these people probably don't even know my last name.
TRISTEN
You just need help finding your swagger.
FLYNN
You could coach me. Teach me everything you know. I'm a fast learner. Accept when it comes to dating. Obviously.
TRISTEN
Okay. But on one condition. Stop talking down on yourself. It's not cool, Martin.
He tosses Flynn his apple.
