You sat at the table, practically inhaling your coffee. The past night was rather long and you didn’t get much sleep, which could be easily seen through the dark circles under your eyes.

You lifted your head when you heard steps and immediately wished you didn’t. Daryl was making his way to the kitchen and since a few days he was probably the last person you wanted to see at any time.

To be honest you still felt little butterflies in your stomach as soon as he would enter the room. You felt drawn to Daryl since he saved you from a group of walkers once. You were already laying on the ground when an arrow shot down the walkers around you. He came soon after, helping you up and asking if you were alright.

Not only taking in his large body, or the way his longish hair framed those piercing blue eyes, but also the smooth sound of his voice and the way his face would brighten if he’d laugh on rare occasions, you were practically head over heels into him.

However, at this point you were just sulking. You tried to be nice, you really did. You would ask him about his day, try to help him with stuff, but the more you tried, the further he seemed to try to get away from you. His eyes would avoid yours, and lately he would leave the room just when you were about to enter, not even greeting you.

“Good morning to you too”, you heard him mumble. His voice was still husky, he probably just woke up. Your head snapped in his direction and you were about to explode at the thought that he was implying you were the one being unfriendly right now.

“Oh, he’s talking”, you glanced at him and took a sip of your coffee. He cocked his head to the side and looked at you for what felt like the first time in ages. “What?”

“Oh come on, you look like you could practically throw up as soon as I enter a damn room and now you’re acting as if everything is fine?”, you scoffed.

Silence settled in the kitchen. It was still dark outside and you could feel his glances on you, but didn’t dare to look up from the mug in your hands. You could hear him move, he was standing across from you at the table, his eyes still on you.

“Ya really think that’s it? ‘Cause ya now.. it’s.. it’s not”. He mumbled the last bit and you were sure that you wouldn’t have heard a word of it if you sat about 5 inches further away.

You lifted your head and looked him straight in the eyes, he looked honest, but what was his problem if it wasn’t you?

“Daryl, these two sentences right now were more than you talked to me in the past few weeks. You don’t look at me and you just always seem to try to get away as fast as possible. If I did anything that made you angry or-”

He shushed you by shaking his had. “It’s not 'bout you.. I just.. I should..”. He was avoiding your eyes again and from the way his body stiffened you could tell he was this short from just storming out of the kitchen.

You got up and walked over to him. This was your last attempt to get anything out of Daryl Dixon. You wouldn’t just let him storm off like that, you would try one last time to try and get to him.

Just. One. Last. Time.

He looked nervous, were you pushing him too far? You didn’t want to make him uncomfortable but what was it, that made him try to avoid you at all costs?

“Daryl…”, you said softly, your hand gently resting on his forearm. He looked at you as your voice broke. You refused to let the tears, that burned in the corners of your eyes, fall, but what were you supposed to do?

Suddenly he pulled you into him, his head bowed down as he pressed his rough lips against yours. You were startled and couldn’t even move. As he felt you not returning the kiss, he was about to pull away, when you finally gathered together what was left of your brain and laid your arms around his neck. He hummed against your lips, pulling you closer to his broad chest.

When you separated again after some moments, you couldn’t help but smile at him. He still seemed shy but a soft smile was plastered on his beautiful face now. He opened his mouth and closed it again, making you chuckle.

“Thought this wasn’t gonna happen anyway…. I.. I’ve been lookin at ya since ya came here but why’d a girl like you want some guy like me?”, he finally said. He was looking at the floor again but his words practically shattered your heart.

You placed a hand on his cheek and made him look at you, tears glistening in your eyes again. “Daryl how on earth could I not love you? You care for the others. You risk your life to keep us safe, you saved my life several times and I never met someone who has been through so much and still is so kind”

He looked at you, stunned, tying to process what you just said. “You love me?”, he whispered, placing one of his large hands above yours, that was still resting on his cheek. You couldn’t help but smile. “I do”. “Even after.. ya know.. me acting like a dick and stuff?”. You laughed at his words, making him smile a bit as well as you nodded again.

“Yes, I love you”, you whispered, looking into his eyes.

“I love you too”, he said as he, again, brought his lips to yours.
