~ Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift~

Manik was pacing the corridor of the hospital, while Nandini lay inside, clad in a white hospital robe that looked as pale as her face. He had brought her here, without informing anyone back at home and now he immensely regretted the decision since it killed him everytime he peeked inside. Nandini was lying in, a saline drip attached to the canula on her left hand, treating her for the mild dehydration she had been diagnosed with. It was nothing serious as per the attending resident but Manik knew it was nothing less. The nurse came out as she paged the senior doctor and Manik looked ahead to see a man in his late twenties, coming towards them.

"Hey, this is Dr. Neil Khanna", the man introduced himself forwarding his hand.

" Manik Malhotra", Manik didn't mean to come out as rude but the tiredness in his voice made it seem so.

"The patient is your?", The doctor questioned and Manik looked at him.

"Wife..", he answered again and Dr Neil nodded before entering in and Manik followed him. Dr Neil took the patient's chart as he read the name. Nandini malhotra.

"Nandini?", The voice seemed more of an acknowlegement than a question to Manik who looked at the bewildered doctor.

"Nandini. Damn. Five years and see how we meet. God", Dr Neil blabbered as he bent to check her pulse and other vitals while she slept under the effect of seadtives. Manik noticed the swiftness with which the doctor worked, changing her medicines and other essentials and making sure she had the utmost comfort. While he was busy noticing the details, Neil called him.

"Manik, can we talk?", He asked and manik nodded, unaware of what was coming his way.

Settling in the lavish cabin of the doctor, manik read the designation below his name plate.

Dr Neil Khanna,
Senior physician,
General medicine.

Manik's eyes roamed around the cabin to find a few book racks stuffed with thousands of medical books, particularly on psychology, novels, times daily and other stuff. Neil sat in front of him studying his gaze.

"Wondering what are these psychology books doing in the cabin of a genral physician?", Neil asked raising a brow with a laughter and Manik smiled, his first in the entire night.

" Well, the credit goes to your wife", Neil answered confusing Manik more than before.

"Actually, Nandini and I had been school mates, we were the adjacent roll numbers and therefore bench partners, lab partners, viva partners and so on until twelfth. She was maths + bio and I was a pure biology student and hence post school, our career choices drifted us apart, so apart that I didn't even know she was married", Neil answered his queries sensing the confusion and Manik nodded at him.
