"Beau, there's a letter on the table for you." My mum Gina called.

"Be there now!" I shouted back.

I crawled out of bed slowly and left my room heading downstairs to the kitchen.

My two brothers, Luke and Jai were sat eating breakfast. They are twins. I am the oldest being 18 and they're 16.

I waited until they left before I opened the letter. See, my mum has been nagging me to get a job so I've applied for a few places. She even chose a few for me.

I ripped it open and my eyes widened in surprise.

"Hey mum? I've been accepted for a job!" I yelled quite excited.

"That's fab. Where?" She grinned walking back into the kitchen after waving the boys off.

"Um, I don't know?" I stared at the letter but I couldn't read it, my eyes were blurry from my hangover. I was surprised they'd accepted me due to my criminal record.

"Oh pass it here." She said snatching it from me breaking my thoughts. I noticed her pale slightly.

"Mum?" I questioned, getting worried.

"It's at the Melbourne Mental Institution."

"T-the crazy house?" I stuttered.

"Yeah. You go there today to see the building."

"I'd better get ready." I gulped. "Fancy dropping me off?"

"Sure, go and get dressed quick."

I sprinted up the stairs and got dressed. I didn't really touch my hair but I placed a snapback firmly on top.

I hopped into my mum's car and she set off down the road. It only took about 20 minutes to get there.

It was isolated on the top of a hill.

"Good luck!" my mum smiled as I got out of the car. I waved at her and watched her car disappear down the silent road back towards town.

I faced the building and gulped slightly.

"Hi. How can I help?" a woman around 40 asked grinning at me.

"Um, I've been accepted for a job. I've got the letter here."

She took the letter and read it through.

"Okay. Go up to the eighteenth floor, there'll be someone ready to meet you at the lift."

"Thanks."

I waited for the lift to come down and pressed number 18. Two doctors, I presume, joined me and were talking about some of the patients.

The lift bell rang and the doors opened. Everything was white. As I stepped out a guy around my edge appeared out of no where.

"Hello, you must be Beau. I'm Sam. You'll be working with me today as a trial run." he said a bit too enthusiastically.

"Hey. Uh yeah, nice to meet you." I replied awkwardly.

"Well. Follow me!"

With that he walked off. I followed quickly taking in my surroundings. There were doors everywhere.

He gave me my uniform which was basically black trousers and a plain white t-shirt. I was allowed to keep my vans on but not my snapback.

I spent two hours sat in an office doing absolutely nothing and I had to be honest, I was extremely bored.

"Come on!" Sam spoke suddenly interrupting my thoughts.

"Huh? What?"

"We're going to do room checks, see how everyone's doing."

"Oh. What do I say to them?" I asked awkwardly.

"Nothing if you don't want to. Some might talk to you however."

"Right. Okay." I half smiled, trying to look confident.

The first few rooms were awful, people screaming, lashing out, crying. It wasn't very nice to see.

He led me to the end room which seemed quite quiet. Sam slowly opened the door to reveal a plain room. I froze when my eyes met with someone elses.

She was the prettiest girl I'd ever seen. Her hair was long and brown, her eyes a browny green but they looked tired and broken.

"How are we today Charlotte?" Sam asked her. Charlotte. What a beautiful name. She looked so fragile, like she shouldn't be here.

She didn't reply. Her eyes were locked on me. I looked back at her properly and she smiled.

I couldn't help but smile back.

"My name's Beau." I took myself off guard saying that.

"Nice to meet you. It's nice to see a new face around here." she replied, a strong welsh accent spilling out.

"Beau will be helping me look after you." Sam spoke up breaking our conversation. I couldn't help but feel slightly pissed off.

"Awesome. He's a lot hotter than you Sammy." she smirked.

"Yeah, whatever. We'll be back later to give you your meds." he snapped. Her smirk soon disappeared and she looked quite upset maybe even worried.

Sam ushered me out of the room and locked the door.

"Be careful of that one." he warned staring at me seriously.

"Why is she in here?"

"She murdered her family."

"Oh. How old is she? She looks pretty young."

"I'll get her file later. She's 17 though. She got brought in here when she was 13."

"Okay, thanks. Only a year younger than me."

"And me." Sam smiled.

"When's lunch?"

"12. We eat about half 11 and all the patients come down then."

"So we watch them?"

"Yeah. I sometimes sit with patients if they're on their own or quiet."

"So you can sit anywhere you want then?"

"Basically."

I nodded then continued with some paper work I'd been given to do.

The clock read half 11 so I set off down the lift with Sam to the large hall. The chairs and tables were all bolted to the floor. It felt like I was in prison.

I ate quickly and observed the other workers. I was sat with Sam and a few others.

I phased out into a daydream. Everything blocked out of my mind.

I was snapped out of it when a loud bell rang, echoing through the halls. I jumped slightly but rose to my feet along with everyone else.

Before I knew it hundreds of patients in their orange jumpsuits were filling the room. I stood in the corner, distanced from everyone.

My eyes were glued to the door waiting for Charlotte. She never came.
