I'll Figure It Out [24]

Ajax had tried to ruin his life. Well, he had to try a little harder, because things were slowly beginning to pick back up again.

Sure, Sans was still feeling down about the fact that he couldn't make any plans to propose to Frisk, seeing as the new policies stopped them from even having a legal marriage. But he was still holding onto the ring, holding onto the hopes that maybe, just maybe, things could get better. He almost had given up. He almost had lost complete hope for everything. Until that one night he spent with Frisk and it was like the world and its problems just disappeared for a bit as they showed how much they meant to one another.

The skeleton wondered why he never thought of it before, but he decided to see if he could go to his father for a job. Gaster worked as a scientist for both monsters and humans - if that wasn't already made clear. True, Sans wasn't really into all that science-y crap nowadays seeing as he had kind of had a troubled past. But he was willing to just forget about all of that and throw it over his shoulder as he went to see Gaster to see if he could offer him a position to work alongside him.

"You want to work with me?" Gaster had wondered when he had placed the suggestion upon his father. Sans nodded.

"yeah. i really need a job and... well, honestly it wasn't exactly my first choice seeing as i know how stressful it can be but... i gotta make a living, y'know? i can't stay bein' a lazybones forever." He grinned, earning a chuckle from his father in response due to the obvious pun.

Sans was pretty ecstatic when Gaster accepted. He'd begin within the next week.

Frisk was happy for him too when she heard the news, glad that he was still moving forward. She was still having stress with her job, just trying to find someone who could help her try and get that new rule pulled back, so that it wouldn't be legal anymore. Sadly, she still had no luck, meaning she and Sans were still spending their time sneaking around when it came to their relationship. Luckily for them, Ajax was still none the wiser and they hadn't been discovered.

But Sans was just so delighted when he'd be able to spend nights with Frisk, cuddling up in bed with her and just talking for hours until they'd eventually pass out from exhaustion. Sans was glad to be there for her on days when she really was just feeling at her worst, having been over worked with her job. The skeleton just allowed her to put her feet up and relax as he always tried in whatever way he could to allow her to feel more comforted.

Anyway, the skeleton was just glad to be able to finally have a job, to feel like maybe after all his time of moping around he was beginning to actually get somewhere again. The best thing that could happen would be Ajax getting taken down from power. But that didn't seem like it was going to happen any time soon. Not unless someone killed him, but too many people shared his ideas.

However, killing him just wasn't an option. Sans knew that killing was wrong, and his reasoning behind wanting to rid Ajax of his life may not have been justified to some. If they had been underground, he would have been able to take him out in a heartbeat. Sadly, this was the surface where there were much stricter rules for this kind of thing, so if Sans did kill him, he'd probably end up getting sent to prison if anyone found out he did it.

Whatever, he wasn't going to stoop as low as that freak of a human to get what he wanted. Perhaps if they were just patient, they could get somewhere. They'd be able to legalise monster/human relationships again, and Sans would be able to propose to the love of his life. Toriel, Asgore and Frisk were still trying to do the best that they could and maybe the hard work would hopefully, finally pay off.

He could only hope it would anyway. He didn't know what else to think to help him stay positive through a time like this. Just that in secret he still got to love his girlfriend and he was grateful for at least that.

Going away from all of that, Sans was actually surprised while working in the lab one day to find Chara and Flowey visiting for some reason. Even though Sans had pretty much forgiven Chara for everything that had happened in the past, he couldn't help but still be slightly wary in her presence without Frisk being there. But he was civil. It would only be if she made some kind of move that he'd go to defend himself.

"Hey, Sans!" Chara chirped, holding Flowey in his flower pot within her hands. Flowey looked glum like usual, which wasn't really any surprise to Sans. He hardly ever saw a cheerful expression on that flower's face.

"oh, hey kid. hey plant. what are you two doin' here?" Sans questioned. "if you're lookin' for gaster, right now he ain't here. he'll be back soon though probably.

"Oh, no." Chara shook her head. "I didn't come to speak to Gaster. Well, him specifically. I came to talk to both of you. It's about Flowey." She said.

"oh? what about him?" Sans questioned. There was a short pause until Chara spoke again.

"Is there any way that you can somehow make him become Asriel again? Using science?" She asked. Sans rose his eyebrows, but couldn't help but sadly chuckle at her question as he shrugged his shoulders.

"i don't know, kid. we just do science, we're not gods.

"We know that!" Flowey snapped at him angrily which caught the skeleton a little off guard until he began glaring in return. "But I'm just so sick of being a flower! I want to be the way I used to be!"

"alright, alright. calm your petals." Sans said, which only got Flowey to grumble under his breath. "personally, i don't even know how that would be possible. ya might wanna ask gaster about that one."

"See? I told you the damn trashbag was good for nothing." Flowey huffed angrily. "First he can't stop some stupid human from shitting on us all, the next--"

"don't even make it sound like it's a problem for you, flower boy." Sans growled at him, the pupils disappearing from his eyes as he glared right at Flowey. "you aren't even affected by this, you don't go out into the real world like the rest of us where it's actually a problem. i actually have to keep my relationship with frisk a secret with the risk of going to prison or maybe worse than that. so don't you DARE try to make it sound like a sob story for you. capiche?" Sans finished, finally glancing away from them as his pupils returned.

"still feel like you wanna be like your old self and go out into the real world? because it's nothing but a mess right now with ajax bein' the one in charge. you're only just going to continue being miserable like the rest of us for bein' treated like second class citizens." He shrugged. "not that it's a competition, but i don't think anyone was as miserable as me when i thought i had lost the chance to be with frisk forever. true, i still can't ask her to marry me, but i can still remain with her in secret. like i said, just that alone has its risks. and it's terrifying, the idea that he could somehow find out the truth. i don't want frisk getting hurt because of me, so i'm doing the best i can to make sure nothing gets messed up. i ain't taking shit from you.

"...Alright, I get it." Flowey sighed. "I know just as well as everyone else that it's been hard for you and Frisk... I just... I'm so tired of being a flower..." Flowey muttered. "...I'm... I'm sorry." He said, catching Sans off guard. Even Chara was surprised to hear the flower apologising. Sans glanced back towards him, took a long pause until eventually he sighed.

"...it's fine." Sans told him, giving him a weak smile. "look, i'll... i'll see what i can do." He said, actually seeing a smile cross the flower's face. "i can't promise anything though. like you said, i'm just a good for nothin'. so...

"...I just said that because I was mad." Flowey admitted. "You've... You're right, you're doing the best that you can..." He said. Sans gave a small chuckle and nodded, seeming to have calmed after the small rant he had given to Flowey. But he was glad to see that Flowey actually apologised to him, that he wasn't just here to give him shit.

Perhaps he could figure something out.
