CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The Earth Bender and Her Avatar

Ami sat next to where her uncle stood, waiting for Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Korra to cross the 'finish line' on their air scooters. She was writing an article for the Republic City Gazette on how her uncle, Bumi, was doing since his retirement. She should've known, however, that she would be interrupted with pages flying around. Sighing, she chased her papers before grabbing them all. Stacking them together, surely out of order, listened to Korra's cheers, Bumi's coughing, and Ikki's whines. Korra must've used the Avatar State again in order to win. Which, in hindsight was a bit unfair.

Ikki stormed over, her bottom lip sticking out as Jinora and Meelo followed her. Ami stretched as she joined Korra's side, leaning on the girl slightly as Korra threw her arms around Ami. "No fair!" Ikki threw her fists in the air. "You can't go into the Avatar state to win!" Korra stuck her tongue out at Ikki as she spoke, causing Ami to roll her eyes playfully. Ikki was ready to fight over the fact that she was meant the win and how Korra had cheated at the end. However, nobody made a rule saying that someone couldn't use any special abilitity.

Ami was about to come to Korra's defense before seeing her father. Standing up straight, she knew another arguement was about to ensue. "You did what?! The Avatar State is not to be used as a booster rocket. You are toying with a dangerous power that you obviously don't appreciate!" Tenzin yelled at Korra. Which, if you knew Korra, she never responded well to yelling. Korra was someone who needed to be taught through medium confrontation. Nothing to gentle, but nothing too rough. Also, she hated being restrained and restricted, and Tenzin often taught by restraining and restricting.

Blinking, Korra looked over to Ami who looked away, not knowing what to say. She didn't want to say she agreed with her father, but she did. Korra, prior to the air scooter, has used the Avatar State often and just to perform household tasks. "Tenzin, it's the "Avatar state," and I'm the Avatar. Who appreciates it more than me?" Korra questioned as Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo looked up at the arguing duo with slightly confused expressions. Tenzin and Korra argued constantly, exposing her younger siblings to the environment that they weren't previously in. Ami gently brough Ikki close, patting her head.

Clearing her throat, Ami looked over at her father. "Dad, don't you kind of think it's cool though? The Avatar state is every Avatar, right? So, it's basically like Grandpa is racing on the air scooters with them. Therefore, it may not be as bad as you think. I actually like the idea of Korra also having fun with my siblings. Especially, because she is my girlfriend. At least they're having fun, and their getting along." Ami finished as Tenzin and Korra blinked at her. Ami's smile dropped as she rolled her eyes, looking away from the two.

"Anyways," Tenzin turned back to Korra, straighting his outfit. "Clearly, you need more training to grasp the depths of your spiritual connections. Not to mention, you are still a long way from mastering airbending." Tenzin stated plainly as he gave her a look thar told her she wasn't even close to being a master.

A look that set Korra off. "I have mastered airbending!" Korra turned around, saying 'punch' everytime she threw an air punch into the air, causing Tenzin to roll his eyes and shake his head. No one was surprised by Korra's demonstrations of her airbending skills because she has done it before.

Ami watched her father run a hand down his face, stopping at his beard. Bumi smirked, nudging his brother as he said Korra had mastered it, as well. Ami couldn't help but snicker at that, earning a glare from Tenzin. "Is it too late for you to un-retire and for you to go to work instead of having a day off?" Tenzin asked Bumi and Ami.

"The paperwork's gone through, little brother. From now on, it's 24/7 Bumi time!" Bumi grinned, walking to Ami, putting arm on her shoulder. "And, my niece and I are here for the chaos you end up creating."

Ignoring his words, he approached Korra. The girl from the South Pole crossed her arms as she looked away with a huff. She was acting a bit childish, but Ami couldn't help but think her pout was cute. "No, Korra. You have mastered your version of airbending. Now, you need to master real airbending. Hopefully, our visits to all of the air temples will give you the inspiration you need to delve more deeply into your studies." Tenzin pulled up a map, unraveling it with a pleased smirked. Korra rolled her eyes, growing more grumpy as her siblings began talking to Tenzin excitedly about the trip.

Ami sighed at her siblings before walking towards her room. She had gotten the proper time off with an explanation that she would be writing about her expierence at the Glacier Spirits Festival and at the Air Temples for the paper, but apart of her didn't want to deal with the arguing. Reaching the top of the stairs, she smiled as she watched Korra bend down to talk to her siblings. Korra. She was going for Korra. She couldn't help but be enamored by the Avatar. She made eye contact with Ami before sending a small wave, causing Ami to grin wider and wave back before heading back to finish her paper before her deadline.

Settling next to Naga and Korra on the ship, a hum left Ami's lips as she pulled out her journal to start some drafts. Hearing a groan from Korra, Ami looked up with raised brows. "Yes, my love?" Ami asked, glancing over at Korra who had a pout on her lips. A pout that she knew she would regret seeing because once she saw Korra's pout, she was going to give into whatever she wanted.

Korra ran a hand along Naga's fur as she looked at Ami. A smile came upon the Beifong's face as she leaned in softly. Korra pulled away before they could kiss though. "You work a lot, you know? And, I train all the time. I think your dad might've forgotten I beat Amon, with airbending. I just feel like we haven't been able to spend quality time together. Can you maybe take a break from writing and spend time with me?" Korra questioned, looking away. It was obvious that Ami's girlfriend was due for some much needed attention.

She wasn't wrong, either. Ami had been doing work a lot lately. Her job only wants her to write about life with Korra, something Ami has been avoiding since it was so personal. So, in order to keep her job, she's thrown herself into different articles. "You know what, Korra? You're right. I'll put away my writing for now, but on the way back, I'll have to write." Ami stacked her papers before slipping them into her bag. Soon, she leaned in, kissing Korra, who didn't pull away this time. It was sweet and loving. A much needed kiss.

Eventually, the two pull away and Ami moved under Korra's arm. Korra always insisted on being the person who holds the other in the relationship since she was dead set on Ami feeling her muscles any chance she got. air was like the weight left their shoulders as they enjoyed each other's company, falling asleep shortly after in each other's arms as Naga curled around them.
