Presentation

I breathed out, trying not to acknowledge my heart pounding so loudly in my chest. Everything in school gave me social anxiety, no matter what the case.

I gave a quick glance to Niall, pulling the guitar to the front of my chest, making sure I wasn't shaking too hard that it would affect my ability to play.

"And what will your presentation be?" the teacher asked, bored out of his mind. He, and the rest of the class, had sat through presentations for the first hour.

"We'll be preforming a song," I smiled lightly, masking my nervousness and trying not to throw up. Niall sighed out happily, glancing at me as we stood in front of the class.

"It's about the hardships the pilgrims had to face when coming to America," he added, nodding at me. I began playing the song we had written together; it had taken hours. He was a much better singer -- actually, I couldn't sing -- so I let him sing what we had written for our quarterly project.

"Late in the year of 1620," he started, letting his voice spread through the room evenly. Everyone perked up a little, knowing he could sing but still willing to listen. "The pilgrims to this country." I continued playing, eventually getting into the part where it became more upbeat. I was smiling as I played until I heard what he was saying.

"But none of that's important now, (Y/N), I had to say this somehow." My eyes shot to his, making me stumble on the notes. He nodded me on, and I proceeded, thinking about all of the practice we had done to make sure this was perfect.

I focused on his words, seeing as how he wouldn't stop staring at me.

"We've known each other for some time," he sang perfectly, hitting all the notes.

What is he doing? Something in the pit of my stomach was bothering me, but I couldn't lose focus.

"And I don't know how to make you mine," he shrugged. A few other guys stood up, coming up only to stop right behind him.

"So there's something I wanna say, and I couldn't wait another day," he grinned, tapping his foot. I tried not to keep playing, severely confused, but I did anyway. Something pushed me on.

"(Y/N), will you go to prom will me?" Niall and the two boys harmonized behind him. "There's no better time to make you see," they resumed. My heart dropped, and I freezed, quiting my number on the guitar and just staring at them.

Niall panicked briefly, obviously not done, but they went on.

"There's no time to say no, so won't you let me know?" they dragged out. Niall's hand reached out for mine, but I hesitated, trying to comprehend what was happening.

"Will you do me the honor of going to prom with me?" he asked, speaking how he would if we were alone or hanging out at his house.

"No," I shook my head, watching him look horrified. He began to speak, but I chuckled to stop him. "You're going to prom with me." He still looked bewildered, so I took his hand, laughing.

"Yes," I grinned, feeling warmth spread through me. I was surprised, but not completely. Nothing with Niall was a secret.

I heard everyone coo around us, but I didn't really care what they thought right then.

"Was that seriously your presentation?" the teacher asked, staring at the both of us. I nodded, smirking at him. He shrugged.

"Your creativity and writing skills are on point, Horan," he commented, scribbling something into the gradebook.

"A plus, both of you." I held back a smile, turning to stare at Niall once more.

"I came up with that on the spot," he whispered in my ear, letting me know just how much he cared about me.
