I ran quicker and faster than I ever had before, feeling the wind and speed push the tears behind me.

He's leaving, my mind reminded me. I shook my head, continuing to sprint down the sidewalk. I pushed him out because I tried to prepare myself for the time of loneliness to come, but I should have been doing the opposite.

The setting sun to my left behind the curving houses prompted me to remember that I had minutes until he left. He had, too.

The light in between the houses momentarily blinded me each time I passed one, keeping his in my sight.

7 o'clock on Tuesday the 13th of April, 2010, he would smile at me, telling me over and over as if he would forget.

I nearly passed his house, making sure his gift wouldn't fall out of my hand. I hurriedly knocked on the door, knowing it was close to being 7 o'clock.

I heard the footsteps from inside, and I felt the world spinning around me, knowing it -- and Niall -- would leave me behind if I wasn't fast enough.

He pulled open the door, a look of relief obvious on his face.

"I thought I would never see you again," he whispered, pulling me into a hug. Finally, my best friend was in my arms again.

"I'm sorry," I sighed as he let go. He stared down at my hands, furrowing his eyebrows.

"What's-" he started, but I didn't want to waste time with meaningless and useless words.

"It's for you," I smiled, handing it to him. He took the guitar out of my hands by the neck, running his hands over it.

"Thank you," he grinned, glancing back as his mother called him. Panic struck me like a bolt of lightning, flashing through me in white-hot heat.

"Niall," I called, trying not to sound desperate.

"I have to go," he said like it was indisputable. I opened my mouth, but everything that I wanted to say got stuck in my throat like I was choking. I shook my head slowly, mashing my lips into a line.

"I should have spent all the time I could with you," I admitted, seeing him look slightly disappointed.

"Sometimes we have to do what's best for us, and what's best for me is going to audition for the X-Factor," he shrugged, making me take a shaky breath. He had slipped out of my fingers already, like sand, and now the beach was flooded to the road.

"I think so, too." He gave me a small smile, and I held back my tears. "But, maybe this is good for the both of us." He nodded, but when I said this, I didn't mean him leaving.

"I meant this," I smiled right before closing the gap between us and kissing him. I hadn't ever known that I liked him in that way, but once I had done it, I didn't regret it. He used his free hand to pull me closer, but I heard his mom call him once more and let go.

"We'll continue this later," he breathed out, letting his hands slip off my waist.

We did.
