I felt the heat and the inflammation in my throat, but I willed myself to keep running; I loved it too much to stop.
Exhaling sharply, I decided I deserved a break before I suffocated. I breathed heavily, watching the morning sun begin to rise over D.C. I wanted to make it to the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool so I could see the sights and maybe grab some breakfast after the sun rose.
I began to run again, going full speed ahead to make sure I didn't miss the sunrise. I heard footsteps behind me and found it strange; I ran that route every other day at that exact time, and no one was ever there.
"On your left," I heard him say. A guy with bright blonde hair ran past me, laughing.
He's fast, I thought. He ran into the distance even though I was still in full throttle. I continued alone, smiling when I thought about it.
About ten minutes later, he showed up again.
"On your left," he repeated.
"Oh, are you?" I played, watching him disappear once more. He flashed me a brilliant smile before running off.
As the monument came into sight, I heard his footsteps, eliciting a smile from me.
Right as he said, "On your left," I said, "On my left." He looked completely surprised, and I had to stop to laugh.
The sun rose as I continued laughing, and I hadn't noticed he had stopped to help me up because I had fallen over. I was right next to the Reflecting Pool, and I finally got over the situation.
"Are you okay?" he asked, chuckling lightly at me. I nodded, still smiling.
"As long as you're on my left," I sighed, giving him an answer without even thinking. He raised an eyebrow as I blushed at what I had said.
"How long do you want me on your left?" he asked, rather jokingly.
"Take me out for some breakfast, and I'll let you know." I was surprised at my confidence. He offered a hand to help me up. The sunrise was beautiful and directly behind him.
"It's a date then," he smiled. I smiled right back.
"A date."
