Michael frantically ran back into his house, throwing on his jacket and shoes. He ran around until he'd grabbed everything he knew he'd need for the journey he'd made far too many times.

He raced out of his house, his lantern guiding him in the darkness. He ran down the familiar road until he reached the moss covered wall.

He took a deep breath, counting to three.

One

Two

Three

He sprinted head first into the wall, closing his eyes shut. When he felt the sunlight hit his skin, he opened his eyes.

He'd entered a seemingly different world, filled with intoxicating colors and sounds, but he couldn't focus on that now.

He glanced up at the seemingly endless tower, jutted towards the sky. He adjusted the backpack against his shoulder, and took a deep breath before making the climb.

Eventually, just when his arms were about to collapse, the tower seemed to shrink and he realized he'd made it to the window.

He climbed in trying to be as silent as he could, but let out a soft gasp as he saw Jeremy tied up in a chair. He landed swiftly on the floor, and Jeremy glanced over in fear. His eyes seemed to drop for a second before his eyes widened again in fear. He tried to jump and motion to Michael, and luckily Michael got the message.

He'd done this before anyway.

He ducked the swift hand, grabbing it and throwing his legs up to kick the thing in the chest. He flipped it over, and it landed with a loud thunk on the floor. It got up quickly, running back at Michael. He waited until the very last minute before jumping out of the way, tripping it on its way down.

The thing stumbled, then slowly rose to a standing position. It seemed to be studying Michael, before a deep, lulling voice entered his head.

So? Choose your weapon, Michael Mell. You've done this before. You know the rules.

A snap was heard, and Jeremy let out a loud gasp as his chains and mask fell to the floor.

"Oh thank god." Jeremy instantly stood up, rushing over to Michael. "Thank you, thank you."

"We haven't escaped yet, so save that for later." Michael glanced around the room, mentally making notes of what he'd already picked for a weapon.

"What are you doing?" Jeremy asked. "Come on, the window is right there." Jeremy tried to pull Michael, but he stayed still.

"Yeah, I've already tried that. It's an illusion."

"Wha-" Jeremy cut himself off, staying quiet as Michael walked around the room.

Please let me be right, please let me be right. Michaels thoughts swarmed his head, as he reached for his weapon of choice. He held up the glass filled with a bubbly red liquid, and gave a smirk.

Really? That's what you choose? The voice asked, doubt in its voice.

"Yes." Michael said, a fax confidence in his voice. He hoped this time he would be right. He didn't want to have to go through the failure again, falling for a hero and forcing them to fall too.

Michael raised the glass, making sure not to spill any of it. He swiftly threw the glass at the thing, and it began to sizzle and scream. Michael stepped back, covering Jeremy with his arm. The boys watched as the thing melted into a black puddle, and the room around them seemed to disintegrate around them. When they opened their eyes, they were standing in a flat, dark grass land. Michael almost started crying when he glanced around. I don't have to do it again. I did it. I finally saved him.

Michael lovingly looked at Jeremy, taking his face in his hands and kissing him softly. "I promise to always protect you. I promise to always love you. I promise to never let that thing come back, no matter what form it takes."

Jeremy nodded his head, saving his questions for later when he saw how tired Michael seemed.

"Come on, Micha. We have school tomorrow." Jeremy gently pulled Michael to the obvious opening, a pathway lit home with fireflies.

When they reached home, Michael flopped onto his bed, pulling Jeremy to his chest. Jeremy willingly put his head down, listening to Michaels steady heartbeat as they fell asleep.

Finally together.
