Darkness, My Old Friend

As we draw closer to death
the aroma of darkness -
that vivid sulfur stench -
ceases to seduce so sweetly.
What was once wonder,
mystery encased in mystical,
morphs into misery and dread
as the unpaved is slowly tread.
Fragments of shade along the way
seep into steady gaps
spawned by curious innocence.
The unknown becomes familiar,
the uncharted the encountered,
And streaks of nightfall
remain as lucid as day.
When we flare closer to death
this experience of shadows
fills us with listlessness,
And we dither in calling
to our old, dear friend.
